Can any one offer advice here please? I've been trying to find 11 Manor Rd. in electoral registers for London 1930-1938. I've found Harrow but not Manor rd., which I have located on map & Google Earth. In 1935 & 1937 an Ernest Humphrey b. 1876 was traveling to & from Quebec, listed as a clerk, then aged 61 no occupation. His UK address 11 Manor Rd. Harrow. I'm still looking for my Maternal G'Mother's brothers- Albert & Ernest. One of whom was known to have died in 'the war'. civilian or military I don't know. Both last seen in 1901 censuses. Unable to sit any longer at computer for a while. Thanks for reading & any likely replies.
I don't know if this is of any help, Wendy, but the 1939 Register has a Nellie Humphries at 11 Manor Road, dob 7th February 1886, working as a Costume Saleswoman. Looks to be a multi dwelling or she's a lodger as the others listed there are William and Amy Lord - he's a Furriers Traveller and she's a Ladies Tailoring Instructress.
Harrow Local History Centre, has an email enquiry, for those unable to visit Code: http://harrowmuseum.org.uk/local-history-centre/
Many thanks Jan, worth delving into a little more. Can't quit until all avenues deleted. Lovely Molly May, thank you, will venture forth in that direction. He must be or have been somewhere. Pardon above mess up. Any kindly admin like to delete it for me? (Done. )
Now I think Manor Road may be a red herring (although Ernest William and Amy Lord may play some part in the search at some point). In Ancestry's London electoral registers select Harrow then Harrow ward (the one immediately under Ealing South West). I have found 11 Manor Road in the following years (jump to the appropriate image number)> 1934 Image 632 1935 Image 698 1936 Image 776 I have also found them with Jan's Nellie Humphries (post 2) in 1938 (I haven't retained a note as to how I got there).. The reason I believe Manor Road is a bit of a red herring is that according to the 1935 and 1937 passenger lists, Ernest Humphrey is resident in Canada not England (see how it says just that in the columns 'country of last permanent residence' and '....future permanent residence'. Permanent residence means at least 1 year. In both 1935 & 1937 his stay in England is only 5-6 weeks. I would say that this is possibly because that's how much leave he has from his employment although I see that when he leaves on 27.07.35 he has no job although when he arrived on 10.06.35 he was a clerk. It's interesting that when he leaves on 21.08.37 he describes himself as a railway employee although when he came in on 11.07.37 he was just a clerk. Although it's tempting to conclude that he worked for a Canadian railway company, he might in fact be working in the offices of a British railway company in Montreal - I'm not sure if there were any, but it's worth bearing in mind.
Well what do you know. National Probate Calendar 1962> Amy Lord of 11 Manor Road, Harrow, Middlesex, widow, died 11 December 1961 at Roxbourne Hospital, Rayners Lane, Harrow. Probate: London 22 March to May Humphreys and Nellie Humphreys, spinsters. Effects £2843 16s 11d. Sounds rather like the Nellie from Jan's post 2....
National Probate Calendar 1965> May Humphreys of 19 Glenwood Close, Elmgrove Road, Harrow, Middlesex, died 14 July 1965 at Edgware General Hospital, Hendon, Middlesex. Probate: London 28 October to Nellie Humphreys, spinster. [Effects] £3460.
Just because I'm never satisfied, for anyone who's followed this, it turns out that Amy Lord is the sister of May, Nellie and Ernest Humphreys who were living together in Leicester in the 1891 Census [RG12 Piece 2536 Folio 35 Page 11]. Amy married William E Lord in Hendon RD in the September Quarter 1920. (Saves you typing all that out Wendy!!). Still haven't nailed that though.....
Flook you are assuredly a National Treasure. Thank you for all of your work. I did see one Ernest from Leicester same age traveling but no occ.listed just C.N.R.station Taschereau as destination. -Canada national Railway?? I also saw an Ernest in 1901 a boarder from Leicester & wine merchant clerk, but in 1901 my Lad was with his sister & Hubby-my G'Ps - in Deptford- as Hamphery! found this one: Canada, Voters Lists, 1935-1980 Census & Electoral Rolls Name: Ernest Humfreys Residence: 1935 - St. Paul, Ontario, Canada I do think you've sorted this particular chap re Manor rd Flook. Another one bites the dust. I was unable to search anymore yesterday & I so appreciate your work. I've even tried to find him in Hastings where my G'Dad surprised me by being found on 1939 register. I researched the people he was boarding with- & found a whole new world of people. It's been suggested he was there for his health- who will ever know? I may just have to let those two lads rest in peace where ever they are/were.
My dad went to Hastings, to a convalescent home in the 1950's. He had had an operation for a stomach ulcer.
Mental picture of Wendy's GrandDad peeping around the corner from a rocking chair, waiting for Wendy to find him... surprise!
I did ask a cousin, but like me he was born after 1939 so knew nothing, G'Ma listed at home in Croydon as invalid- she died in 1940, again before I arrived- so it's quite possible G'Dad went away to recuperate. I at least found family connections in Hastings [G'Mum's Humphrey lot] If only Barb,.. it took me until last year to find G'Dad's youngest Brother - in N.Zealand where he joined the Army, & after the war went to NSW where Trove sorted him for me. . Oh well, to keep slogging away.
