Hey All! I'm helping someone try to track down how their great-great-grandmother arrived in the USA. This is the information they've sent me: "Her name was Emma Craven she was born 22 NOV 1859 Bradford, Yorkshire, England and came to the us with her family between 1861 and 1870 They where living in Bradford in the 1861 census the in 1870 the are in Chicago Ward 12, Cook, Illinois i just want to know how they got there: Emma's family: Father Jesse craven B abt. 1824 Mother Dinah Asquith/Askwith Craven B abt 1822 Son Thomas Wm Craven B abt 1847 Daughter Elizabeth craven B abt 1858 Daughter Emma Craven abt 1859" In my own searching, I've found them in Missouri in 1880. As far as any immigration records available on the Ancestry website, I was able to find 1, for Jesse Craven, in 1866....but he's the only family member listed there. I've tried searching individually for each of her immediate family hoping that one of them pops up somewhere, but I can't seem to find anything. I'm wondering if anyone here is able to point me in the general direction of where else to look! Thanks so much!
Hello ambern, welcome. Jesse Craven married Diana Asquith 1846 September Bradford. So far no real luck but another Jesse Craven 39 and wife HANNAH age 40 arriving in 1866, Boston. Forgot the ship name I wonder if it could be them. Ages not right and no children but as Thomas was older he could have come separately with the girls at a later date. Pure speculation and Hannah could sound a bit like Diana....
Hey, Ambern. I'm going to resist the urge to do your searching for you as it sounds as though you may want to do it yourself... or did I get that wrong. I can't remember exactly which years, but many census images have a column for year of immigration, or how many years in this county. Also, if she was naturalized, or more likely her father, the paperwork should say when and sometimes port of entry or border crossing. Not always, though. Um, there are passenger list sites - ISTG and Castle Garden are two that come to mind.
Thank you! I found a passenger/crew list for a ship in 1864 that lists a Thomas Craven. Age is close but not exact. I always do a +/- for years of birth; I've had family members where the year of birth changed with every record lol
I didn't want to assume that anyone would do the work for me I do also enjoy looking so that the next time I hit a wall with something, I know which resource to hit up! Thanks for the passenger list sites. I didn't realize there were sites specifically for that!!
