In the 1911 census I have found what I believe to be my ancestor, Lydia Wells, as a visitor ED 3, Household Schedule 30, Piece 3836. The age of this Lydia goes with my Lydia and she is listed as married 27 years which also goes with my Lydia, but the children columns are blank.

I can't find hubby and/or children in this census. If someone could have a look for me it would be appreciated. I have checked FreeBMD and as far as I can tell all died after 1911, but I couldn't find Bertie. I've tried looking for the children on their own too.

John William Wells b. 1865 Frindsbury, Kent.
John William Richard Wells b.1886 Swanscombe, Kent
Arthur George A Wells b.1890 Swanscombe, Kent
Bertie (sic) Wells b.1897 Swanscombe, Kent

    Thank you.

There is the death of a Bertie Wells age 14, Sevenoaks in 1909. Age out a bit though and I'm not sure where Sevenoaks is.
Was he Bertie, Herbert or Albert?

He was Bertie AM. I saw that death, but didn't think it would be him as the family seemed to stay in the Swanscombe, Northfleet area from when they married in 1885. Having said that Sevenoaks is just 10kms away, so could be him.

There is a newspaper report of the death of this Bertie and he was the 14 year old son of Mr Charles Wells of Rectory Lane, Brasted. The poor lad was killed when a load of earth and stone fell on him in a sandpit. :(

    Thank you Ann.
Having found that out and all other males seem to have 3 names, Bertie just the one so far, there is a marriage of a Bertie J H Wells to a Dora E M Tolhurst in 1927 in Kent.

There is a death for a Berty Wells, registered in Dartford (which covers Swanscombe), aged 4, in 1902 (4a 404).

I'm not sure what's going on Wendy! Lydia, mother of Bertie, is in Northfleet as a visitor in the 1911 census, which is not that far away and she says she's married. shall have to look further in to Alice, me thinks!

There is a marriage of Edward John Wells to Ada Hickford, Stroud 1891. Looking at the 'Baker Family Tree' Edward John Wells was born 1865 father William Penfold Wells at Northfleet and died at Swanscombe. There is no Alice listed as one of their children but 2 children came up as private, no name.

I found this one Wendy. Lizzie is 2nd cousin, once removed, to John's wife Lydia. I think I found Lydia in a workhouse. But that's a query for another time.
