I'm not so sure he did, only because the business is called M Perkins & Son Ltd. I found him and wife Margaret in the 1851 census HO107, Piece 1534, Folio531, Page 513. It says he was born in Colnbrooke, Bucks (Buckinghamshire), c. 1781. I have found a baptism there 11 Jun 1781, parents Tho. & Eliz. Perkins. That's as far as I've got.

 

Yes, I agree. It is just the way that I read it....The first written appearance appears to be in the 1812 Post Office Guide when William was heading the business. So essentially it could have been around for generations before that. They were/are situated in the old Huguenot area so maybe it goes way back to that.

 

But then I found this:
M Perkins and Son was established in 1813 initially to manufacture fringes and other trimmings for ecclesiastical vestments.....
I wonder was it named for Margaret!

 

Was Margaret a 'Goodwin'?
