I am trying to trace my Fathers WW1 army service record. He was William Clegg b 07/01/1898 in Handsworth, Sheffield d 18/02/1989 in Bolsover, Chesterfield Derbyshire. He married my Mother Emily (Wright) on 18/11/1920 in Staveley, Chesterfield shown residing in Bolsover and at that time employed as a miner. The 1911 census shows William living at 71 Rawmarsh Hill, Parkgate, Rotherham with his parents. The 1918 (spring) Electoral Register shows Williams parents living in Castle Lane, Bolsover but William is not show (maybe his age) The 1919 and 1920 (both spring) Electoral registers also do not show William living with his parents in Bolsover, by this time he would be over 21 years. William is not shown in the 1918 AVL for Chesterfield (which would have included Bolsover) he may not have been eligible or registered. The 1918 AVL was published by Edmunds Limited. The 1919 AVL is so far lost and it would be helpful to find this. I have checked with Derbyshire CC Archives, Chesterfield BC and Bolsover DC. They have no records of this List which is difficult to understand since the 1918 AVL shows about 4,000 names. I have many medal record cards for William Clegg, W. Clegg which I am not able to cross check residency and birth. I and other family members recollect a large photograph of my Father in army uniform and the only information is that he served as a Batman to an Officer taking messages to the front line. I also have an old scribbled note “North Staffs Light Infantry – France”. This note tallies with one of the 100 or so medal record cards which suggests - Regiment, No 45296, with medal record if/104B14 on page 1724. I do not know how to take this further. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My apologies for the lengthy note. Thank you.
This response does not help you with your queries but I have a snippet of "negative information" and according to my limited research, your William Clegg never worked at Bolsover Colliery = at least he does not appear in a particular document of employees in my possession. Thank you Jack very much appreciated. I know my Father worked at Markham Colliery for most of his life but do not know if he was there at that time. My Brother, also William, I understand did work at Bolsover in the 50's and 60's.
When I was a 16/17 year old youth 1951/52, I was in the N.C.B. offices and on Fridays we used to attend at Markham Colliery offices - a "hall/room" , make up the wages and then pay out to the men, but I digress. If you tell me your brothers name I can give you a few details of his "pit" details if he worked at Bolsover, but you may prefer me to do it privately.
