Hmmmmm. I'm not discarding the 1841 census entry yet but on Family Search John and Ann Simpson baptised at least 2 children at Wadworth viz.:

    Ann Simpson 13th october 1791

    John Simpson 17 May 1796

    Hmph…..

Hmmmm not sure where John fits in but.......

There is a John Simpson baptised in St. Mary, Newark on 01 Sep 1826
father John and mother Ann. Father Occupation Ostler.

But as you see this John was baptised on the 1st September and Georges son Henry was baptised on 17 September of the same year.

Now not an impossibility but why would he be John to baptise his son on the 1st but George to baptise his other son on the 17th.

I would hazard a guess at John and George being 2 different people. You and Flook have been at this a lot longer than me so you tell me :)

I would have said that this is the brother and sister shown in the 1851. so this is 'your' John's parents maybe?

I agree but if we assume that, then why are George Simpson and Ann living in Beaumond Street in 1841, and then in 1851 Ann is living with a John Simpson at the same address? I thought I found a death for George in 1849 but if I did, who on earth is John?

Talking of licenced victuallers, have you checked the records for licencees? The following website has some very useful information. Scroll down and it will tell you where to find the records. :)

You're surely not going to ask me if I know someone who lives near Nottingham Local Studies Library where they have early Nottinghamshire Directories are you?

So John and Ann Simpson were running an Inn in Beaumond Street in 1841. Presumab;y the Cross Keys. Hmmm.

This still doesn't rule out George being a "publican" in 1842. William may have just aggrandized his father's job (or am I clutching at straws here).

Apparently, there is a link within this website that does not work. It is for the Family Records Centre, which used to be in Myddleton Street, London. This has closed and all of those records moved to The National Archives.

Both of these notices from the Nottinghamshire Guardian

    27th January 1856
At Newark on the 18th instant (then follows several deaths) ....on the same day, much respected, aged 59, Mr John Simpson, Beamond Street, for many years landlord of the Cross Keys.

    6th July 1877
On London Road, Newark on Trent on the 28th ult. Ann, relict of the late John Simpson, formerly of the Cross Keys Inn aged 77 years.

Will see if I can find any more later

Ann George Simpson of Beamond Street was kicked by a mare and died 21 June 1849 apparently in Market Rasen. He was returned to Newark and buried there. I wondered whether there was anything in the newspapers about this accident. If you got five minutes to dig around I would be grateful.

Pity there wasn't a brother George in there somewhere Chimpy. The George in Beamond Street was not of county but as he popped his clogs in 1849 we don't know where he was from.

So, just to tie off the loose end. If George died in 1849 what happened to the rest of the family? Henry married the same year, Fred died in 1846. No idea about the rest. I cannot find Ann in 1851 but have only looked superficially.
