James Mullins is my great-great-great-grandfather, and the 1851 census says his parents Dennis (who was a bricklayer) and Ellen were both Irish. Their Islington street had a fair few parents from the Emerald Isle, in fact. I've been trying to delve into the Mullins family background, but I'm kind of stumped. In 1851, Dennis and Ellen are 34 and 32 respectively, but in 1861 Dennis is 42 and Ellen 47. That's got to be more than a mere census error. To throw a further spanner into the works, James' father is listed as either 'David' or 'Daniel' on his marriage certificate - I just can't tell from the clerk's squiggles. Plus James' baptism - which I thought would clear the matter - isn't traceable. I had thought I'd found some firm evidence on this bunch before, but re-tracing it to double-check and now finding these mistakes has made me question a lot.

There's a James Mullins on the GRO:

    MULLINS, JAMES mmn: HOWES
GRO Reference: 1846 D Quarter in THE SHOREDITCH DISTRICT Volume 02 Page 387

Do you have access to Ancestry? There's a tree on there that has quite a lot of information on his birth. Father's name Dennis Mullins and mother's name Ellen Howes.

To me it looks like David, but others might like to see what they think.

Maybe he was Dennis AKA David. My father-in-law was Albert, but everyone called him Joe!

I'd say 'tin presser' but that looks like no 'P' I've ever seen before. Has anyone seen the 1841 census for him?

1861 census has him as a Labourer, but I can't work out what it is. Thought it might help to confirm that the marriage certificate is the right one.

I couldn't find in Wendy and neither could a few other people in family trees on Ancestry. I even tried looking for a couple of the children and also different surnames Mulins and Malins.

He appears to be a bricklayers lab'r in 1851, a lab'r in 1861 -not found in 1841 unless that's he in the Army.'Fold3'

On first reading I put Daniel/David's (a perennial problem in my line) occupation as tin dresser (lower case first letters), but I am not so sure now.
Has anyone mentioned one of the witnesses is William Mullins?

Oops, was going to! The other witness, I think, is Catherine Mullins MM. But I could be mistaken. Going back and forth between here and the garden, my two favourite places.
