Hello Everyone, Today, I am researching my hubby's Watling family. I have Matthew Watling born in Norfolk possibly to Simon Watling and Sarah Milligan in 1819. Rumour has always been that he was the father of William Watling born about 1836 in Brockdish Norfolk, the mother being Emma or Emily Leaper. I have found a marriage of William Watling and Emily Leaper in Hoxne, Suffolk in 1839 and believe this "could be" correct. In the 1841 census for Hoxne, Matthew and Emily are there with William and a new baby Sarah. Is there anything else that can prove this is correct??
    Thank you, Wendy aka MrsHuma

I am unable to help you prove who William's father was, but if you don't have it the 1911 census has him enumerated as WIlliam WATLING LEAPER.

Family Search has the baptism at Oakley, Suffolk on 31 January 1841 of a Sarah WATLING daughter of Matthew & Emily WATLING which would tie in with the 1841 census record Wendy has found for you in the above post. However, I cannot find a baptism for William - so far!

Hi Janet! From what I gather William is christened in 1836 in Norfolk. Thank you for your help. Wendy has also been a gem!!

There are Banns for Jonathan Cattermole (widower) and Emma Watling (widow) that were read on:-

28th February, 7th March and 14th March 1847 - in the side margin is written 'Not Married ?' or 'Not Widowed ?'

    upload_2016-11-26_7-40-14.png

The Banns were then called again on:-

    11th May, 18th May, and 25th May 1862

The marriage took place on 28th May 1862 at the parish church Diss.

I think this could be a strong possibility for the baptism of your William - parish register image available to view via Ancestry:

17 May 1835 at Brockdish William illegitimate son of William COLLS of this parish, Labourer, & Emma LEAPER of this parish, spinster, privately baptised.

    What do you think, Wendy?
