I do apologise if this is already in a thread somewhere.
I found an article about my Great Grandfather Stanley Augustus Wright this evening on Gene's reunited. It's title was "Remedied" from what I can tell he was caught breaking and entering a shop. He was fined 10s. It then states his name and then shnger. of Elstow Road. Bedford.
Can anyone shed some light on this.
I know he served as Seaman in the Royal Navy official number J34902 in 1915.

I've looked at the Bedfordshire Times (27 Oct 1939) and it actually says he was a slinger. Now off to find out what a slinger could be:).

oh fantastic! Thank you. Interesting! I could only see the preview. I have just had a quick gander at Google. It was a person who used slings for loading goods on ships, wagons etc.

Well it seems as though it's a person who was responsible for securing and unloading objects which were transported by cranes. So before an item, e.g. a car body, was moved from one part of a factory to another by a crane, it had to be securely fastened to the crane's hook by chains.

This makes sense as Bedford was a large centre for vehicle manufacture and it looks as though your Great Grandfather worked in one of the vehicle factories in Bedford.

Thanks so much Flook! That is interesting. I know he moved to Australia sometime in the 50's. As did my Grand Parents. According to my dad he was a very hard man and didn't like children much.

Bedfordshire Times and Standard. 27 October 1939. Page 5.

"Fines of 10s. were imposed on Stanley Augustus Wright, a slinger, of Elstow Road, Bedford, and William Richards, an assistant caretaker, of Victoria Road, Bedford. Richards's offence concerned the Employment Exchange, Dane Street".

It's not clear whether your GGF had anything to do with Richards's offence.

    10s. was 10 shillings. A pound [£] was 20 shillings.

Then we ought to be able to find them on a boat's passenger list (although no promises!). If you post the names we could have a scout around for you if you want.

There are only a few 'rules' on Top Dog and one of them is that no one should post the name of a living person; I suspect this doesn't apply in your case anyway.

Thank you for taking the time to write that up. Interesting, perhaps he was fined for a different matter. I am now back to Google finding out what an Employment Exchange was or is out of curiosity. Thanks Again Flook for your help :)

No my Grand Parent's are no longer living. That would be much appreciated!
I know they sailed to Australia (Adelaide) in 1954 with their 3 children in which 2 are still living so I won't list their names.
My grandfather was Stanley E Wright
Grandmother Margaret J Wright ( Could possibly be Joan Margaret, she always called herself Joan.)
My Great Grandmother was Lucy Wright (nee Skevington). Also known as Pearl. They came to Adelaide also but I'm not sure what year.
    Very much appreciated! :)

fantastic! Thank you so much! There is a bit of Mystery surrounding this Mr M Wright. I don't think he was their son but rather a child of another relative. But the date for Mrs L Wright (Lucy) is correct :) Thank you again Flook!

I see there is a marriage in Surrey Mid Eastern Registration District in December Quarter 1944 between Stanley E Wright and Margaret J Slater.

As far as you know, are these your grandparents?

Yes they are my grandparents. I have a copy of the marriage certificate that I ordered years ago. But on the Slater side I haven't been able to find much information. I know my GG was in the army (on maternal side) and my Grandmother had a brother and a sister. I have been unable to locate their names.

They were married on Christmas Day :) and my Grandmothers officer at the time wrote away to the Red Cross and they sent her a lovely white wedding dress :)
