In the 1881 Census RG11 Piece 4796 Fol. 107 page 10 there is a George someone who is a tailor and beer house keeper at the Bay Horse Inn. Can anyone decipher his surname and tie him in to any other census please?
Think this is him in 1871, along with wife Harriet at Middle Street, Kilham, Driffield. RG10/4809/110/16
A George DURHAM married a Harriet BOYES on 17 December 1870 at Kilham. FMP have the marriage certificate.
Oh brilliant - that must be my man. Thank you. The writing on the census is what you might describe as almost TOO neat!!
Hello, I recently found a small button stamped DURHAM TAILORS KILHAM while metal detecting in a farmers field at Cottam Warren north of Driffield. I started to research the name, purely for interest and so far have found the same info as on posts 1-5 above. I would appreciate it if you could help with any more information you might have found on George Durham. Fascinating stuff! Thanks
I am sorry, I don't have any further information about him. I was doing some research for someone else and I didn't pursue this line. I see that Harriet Durham is a servant living in Scarborough in the 1891 census. By this time she had been widowed. See RG12 Piece 3964 Folio 78 Page 71. According to the National Probate Calendar (on Ancestry), George Durham, late of Kilham [Yorkshire]...Tailor and Beerhouse Keeper, died on 22 March 1887 at Walkington, Yorkshire. He left £65 5 shillings and sixpence which went to his wife. I hope this information is of some interest to you.
I really appreciate your help, thanks again! George Durham's "Beer house" The Bay Horse inn is still open at Kilham. There is also quite a lot of information about George Durham in the national newspaper archive, claims against debtors, licencing applications etc. All this from an old button!
