Kept from the History Books

0.00/5,
Recently, I was watching a television programme where the two “Hairy Bikers”, Si King and Dave Myers, were following Route 66 across America. One of the places at which they stopped was Tulsa in Oklahoma, where they visited the city’s best known soul food joint. It was here that they learnt of one of the darker chapters in American history - the Greenwood Massacre. On 30th May 1921, a black teenager entered a lift in an office building. The white female lift operator screamed once the lift was in motion and the lad fled from the building. The Police were called and the teenager, Dick Rowland, was found and arrested.

Later that day, a front page story in the Tulsa Tribune stated that the teenager had sexually assaulted the girl. An angry mob of white people gathered, demanding that the teenager be handed over to them. Later that evening, a group of about 25 armed black men arrived at the Courthouse to offer the Sherriff help in guarding the teenager. The group of white men swelled their numbers and, by 10pm, there were 1,500 white men, many armed, facing off 75 black men.

Starting the next day, that is one hundred years ago today, the area of Greenwood, an African American area in Tulsa, was effectively destroyed. It has been estimated that 1,256 houses were burned, 215 others were looted plus a school, library, hospital, hotels, shops and even churches were destroyed. It has also been suggested that up to 300 people were killed, although the Government statistics stated this figure as 36: 26 black and 10 white.

The whole event was swept under the carpet – the Tulsa Tribune destroyed all records of that front page, Police archives went missing and it was never written about in history books. However, following legislation, the event has finally been taught in schools since 2004 and included in the history books since 2009.

Dick Rowland was acquitted, left the town and was not heard of again.

US slavery and the horrible maltreatment of blacks is one of my sideline interests and tbh, I did not know of this one till a week ago!!! There are no words....

We've been hearing about it the past few years as the 100th anniversary is here. Sadly, there have been threats of violence against the remembrance ceremonies planned by the descendants. :( Can't say more without getting political.

    That’s ok GrannyBarb...
..we don’t understand it either but there are good people like you and then there are “others”. My interest is two fold. Husband grew up in Jamaica but I ran into it at the age of 20 in the Miami area and was baffled and horrified. I hadn’t met Ron at that time. I refer to myself and you as colour blind.

Jan.........I remember a few details. The area was known as the "Black Wall Street" (financial district like NY). So...many wealthy blacks were doing well there. But I didn't know all that much.

We have an area in Halifax, Nova Scotia that was poor black folks with nice houses I think...Called Africville!! I asked many whites when we were there.... where it had been and got nowhere.

Many nasty things were done to them. No electricity, no water and that sort of thing. I assume it was the politicians in Halifax that wanted the land there, so drove them out and demolished their homes. And they will NOT talk about it. Probably about 50 years ago. Racism is alive and well in Canada, but we are not as ruthless as the US and other places.

I don't understand it either because I have many "friends of colour" in the family, and outside it. I see people for what they are in their hearts.....not the colour of their skin. For 60 years I have had to explain how Ron grew up in Jamaica and was white!! (not 100% btw) and I don't like it. Blacks have also been mystified. C'est la vie!!

Doesn't surprise me either but I find it hard to believe that so much violent racial hate, based on colour, in a nation can go on for such a long time.

It was mentioned on our TV last evening, apparently there was some sort of ceremony in America with Joe Biden attending.
