    Hello Everyone!

Tracking down more Dando wives. This time it is Jane Green who married George Dando 21 April 1753 in High Littleton. George, mother, father and siblings moved from Paulton to High Littleton in 1736/1737. Paulton was responsible for them in their old age.

The marriage on Michael Browning's site is:
1753 Apr 21 George DANDO son of George DANDO m Jane GREEN by Reverend Mr. Philip WHITTACKER
This George is the 2nd of 5 of my George Dando's

Anyhow, no father is listed for Jane, so this leaves me in the dark, as there is no baptism for Jane Green in High Littleton within 5 years younger of George baptized in 1727 in Paulton.

I have been tracking Jane Green's down and here are my findings:
    1. Jane Greene 9 Mar 1727/8 Shepton Mallet St Peter and Paul father Lawrence Greene mother Jane
    2. Jane Green 25 Feb 1729/30 Ditcheat St Mary Magdalene father William Green and mother Jane
    3. Jane Green 25 Feb 1730/31 Ditcheat St Mary Magdalene father William Green and mother Jane (possibly the first one died?)
    4. Jane Green 28 Nov 1731 Brewham St John the Baptist father Elias Green and mother Mary
    5. Jane Green 24 Jan 1733 Butcombe St Michael and All Angels father John Green and Anne
    6. Jane Green 18 Aug 1734 Bath Bath Abbey father Mercycles Green

Wouldn't Mercycles be great, might be easier to track him down!!

Still need to look at the Jane's that are up to 5 years older than George.

    Any help gratefully appreciated.

This thread caught my eye because I lived (until quite recently) in the village - Timsbury - next to High Littleton and even now I don't live very far away.

I think you are in Canada, aren't you, Wendy? I don't know how familiar you are with the geography of this area (North Somerset) but Clutton and Paulton are each only a few miles from High Littleton.

None of the places you mention in the original post for births of Jane Greens are very near to High Littleton/Paulton/Clutton (which might have been helpful) but of all those listed my guess would be that Shepton Mallet would be the most likely. I base that largely on the fact that Shepton Mallet is on the main road due south of Clutton and that both Paulton and High Littleton are not far off this road. Given that people tended not to move very far in the mid C18th and that I know that there was regular 'traffic' (goods and people) along this main road it seems a strong possibility to me. It's not any sort of proof, of course.

Interestingly, Dando is still a fairly common family name in this area.

There's always the possibility Wendy, that Jane Green was an orphan or just didn't know who her Father was if he died early & perhaps Mother wasn't around either.
Try to stay cheery & positive tho', didn't mean to put a damper on.

A clue might be that the first child of Jane & George was baptised in Clutton. Often a woman pregnant with her first child would have the child where her family were living and if you look on FreeReg you will find a lot of GREEN burials in Clutton. However, having said all that, I cannot find a baptism for Jane at Clutton but it may still be worth your while compiling family trees for the GREEN families at Clutton.

Hello CarolF - I am in Victoria BC Canada and I don't know the geography of Somerset at all, except what I have looked up on the internet and from valuable information from all the great people at TopDog!! :D Love that you live in the area still! You are a valuable commodity to me!!

    In Michael Browning's website High Littleton and Hallatrow Records, I have found some interesting tidbits, such as;

An Acc't of Joseph BRODRIBB Sen'r and Wm. D[R]URY, Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of High-littleton, for the Year 1777.
    Pd. for the Examination of Tho's & Sam'l GREEN 2. 0

An Acc't of George CLARK & John BLINMAN, Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of High-littleton, for the Year 1779.
    Pd. Sam'l GREEN, Thomas DURY & James GREENLAND 3 Mil(l)itia Men 7.10. 0

Robert Holloway married Dinah GREEN at High Littleton on 19 May 1807. Dinah (nee MERCHANT) was the widow of Isaac GREEN, who died in 1803, and was 20 years Robert's junior.

More to come, must go out!

    Hello Janet!
Interesting, I should have thought of that! I did find one tidbit that would fit quite nicely with her being from Clutton, which is:

MISCELLANEOUS EXAMINATIONS on Michael Browning's webpage for High Littleton/Hallatrow

Adam GREEN of Clutton was examined in 1736 but his Examination has not survived. SRO D/P/lit.h. 13/2/1.

Well, if I can ever help with info. about the villages where 'your' family lived I'll be happy to do what I can. I expect you already know that these villages were on the North Somerset coalfield and I think I saw in another of your posts that some of your ancestors were coal miners. The last mine on the coal field didn't close down until the early 1970s but the pits in and around 'your' villages closed much earlier. Conditions were really difficult - very narrow seams etc - it was a very hard life.
This page gives a good overview:
    Code:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerset_Coalfield
It's hard to believe that the area was once a hive of industry. Now 'your' villages are largely commuter villages for Bath and Bristol and other towns in the area, but there's still some evidence on the ground for the mining past if you know what to look for.

I'm not as familiar with Michael Browning's invaluable work as you clearly are, but I have used it myself once or twice when researching for someone else. My own family aren't from the area at all - I'm an 'incomer' - but I have lived here for about 40 years.

I think I saw in another post that you have 'Sage' in your family. That's still a very common name round here.

Hope you manage to track Jane Green down. I did look on Ancestry - but no luck, I'm afraid. I suppose the Somerset Record Office (in Taunton) might be a good place to ask. I'm afraid I can't get there (no car), but there might be another Forum member who could help?

    Good hunting!

Hi Carole! My 2nd g grandmother, Mary Ann Dando married Jesse Sage in 1846 in Dudley Worchester, they emigrated to Nanaimo BC Canada on the Princess Royal in 1854. Jesse was a coal miner. I have been tracking them since the early 1990's.

Mary Ann's father was George Dando born 1801 (HL) to George Dando and Martha Hanney. Dando's go back to 1700's in HL.

Jesse's father was William Sage born 1795 (HL) to George Sage and Jane Parfitt. Sage's go back to 1700's in HL.

Seems I go a long way back in High Littleton. I actually corresponded with Michael Browning, long before the website was up and running. I was very sad when he passed away, but he has left a HUGE legacy. His daughter Jemma maintains the site and she says on the site that much of his work has been donated to the Radstock Museum.

    Thank you for the post.

    Wendy :)

Upon doing some more sniffing around on the internet, I have found that the Somerset Archives have records on Clutton from the 16 and 1700's and have sent an email requesting information. Will wait to see what turns up.

Oooh .... fingers crossed that they will have something useful, Wendy.

Ah ... that's interesting. I knew that mining families moved from the N. Somerset coalfield to South Wales as pits in this area shut down, but not that they had gone to the Midlands. Dudley (in the county of Worcestershire - not Worchester) is several miles west of Birmingham, which just happens to be where most of my ancestors came from originally.

Parfitts are still in this area too - as well as Dandos and Sages as I have previously mentioned.

Indeed. Michael Browning did a great deal of fantastic work. I don't know Jemma Browning myself, but I expect I know someone who does if she's still in High Littleton! Coincidentally, I used to volunteer at Radstock Museum (in the tea room) but know several people who help there on the archive side. It's only a couple of miles away and I can easily get there on the bus so if any of the records Michael Browning donated to the museum are of potential interest to you just let me know. There's a link to the list of what he donated to them on the front page of his website.

Great to chat to someone so far away with such close links to HL etc.

    Hi Wendy,

I meant to ask in my message above ... do you have a copy of Michael Browning's 'Pictorial History of High Littleton and Hallatrow'? If not, would you like me to see if I can obtain one for you? I see there are a couple available on Amazon (uk) or I could try locally and I'd be very happy to do that.
