hi, new to the forum. I have hit a brick wall for few years now. Jeremiah Constantine born cork, ireland between 1804-1812 moved to portsea island and joined the navy. he married Elizabeth Glover in 1841. I have their marriage certificate with Jeremiah father as Michael. I am hoping to find Jeremiah birth or baptism and his parents details. If anyone can shed lights on this. It would be a massive breakthrough! can anyone help please please. many thanks vicki
Hi Vicki - welcome to the forum! I have been trying to access the Irish Genealogy website that is supported by the Irish Government, but it is not letting me in for some reason. Click the link to see if you can and have a rummage. Also, the Flyleaf Press has a great little book entitled Tracing your Cork Ancestors. I have a copy of their Dublin version and find it extremely helpful. Might be worth investing in one.
Hi Jan, I click on the Irish Genealogy but the page isn't working. Thanks for the tip will look into the book. Vicki
Was this the Royal Navy or Merchant Navy? Do you know which rank he held? There is a TNA Research Guide here that might help if he was a RN rating and joined before 1853. Do you have him in any censuses at all?
Hi Jan yeah i have Jeremiah in census 1851 with Elizabeth in Portsea Island. He is causing a real headache that keep making me stop looking and coming back to it. but keep defeating me. He had a son James Constantine born in portsea island moved to kent he was also in the Navy. I am not sure which one though. Vicki
Courtesy of FMP Jeremiah's Merchant Navy record (1845) shows a birthday of 25th March 1805, Cork. He was a Seaman Gunner.
I wonder if Jeremiah was actually born in Ireland. There is a Michael CONSTANTINE and wife Mary having 4 children in various parishes in Hampshire which are all adjacent to Portsea/Portsmouth from 1803-1810 - unfortunately not a Jeremiah but plenty of room for him to be baptised between 1805-1811 which are the two birthdates he gives in census records. There is a burial record for a Michael CONSTANTINE at Wymering, Hampshire on 15 November 1823, aged 54, which could be relevant to you. Non-conformist birth of a Michael CONSTANTINE at Holborn Lying in Hospital on 16 March 1769, parents Thomas & Elizabeth, and a marriage at St Andrew, Holborn on 1 November 1792 between Michael CONSTANTINE & Mary BATCHELOR, both of the parish. It would appear that a Michael CONSTANTINE was also in the Royal Navy, as FindmyPast have naval records for him for the years 1800 and 1801, so could Jeremiah have been born whilst Michael & his wife Mary were perhaps in Ireland? However, I'm not sure this is the same Michael CONSTANTINE as his Greenwich Pensioner records show he was born c1752 - can't give you full details I'm afraid, because of FMP's terms & conditions. Not sure whether this helps at all, but may give you other avenues to explore. Janet
i had this information. Can never know if it him as the name is cut short. Name Jerh Constine Medal or Award Naval General Service Medal Service Year 1840-1842 Service Location Syria and China Campaign or Service Syria and China Ship Name Charlotte
Cross posted with Lizzy, so perhaps the Michael in Hampshire is not so relevant, but the Michael in the Greenwich Pensioners record does have an Irish connection but may be a bit old to be Jeremiah's father?? Janet
Well done! For some reason FMP claimed high usage and told me to come back later. There must've been a fair few people looking for Jeremiah!
well he certainly wasnt an easy man to find! been looking for years even had sub with ancestry and kept getting no where.
