I've just been looking at the official website for Glamis Castle in Scotland where the Queen Mother grew up.

    It says this about her>

"Some mystery still surrounds exactly where Elizabeth was born, but we know she was not born at Glamis as is sometimes mistakenly assumed. It was long thought she was born at St. Paul’s Walden Bury, but is now believed that she was born in London, perhaps at the family’s town house. Elizabeth was the ninth of ten children."

I just find that extraordinary, but it's obviously true.

I always understood that she was born in London. :)

I wonder what it says in the 1901 and 1911 censuses..... ;)

The 1900 census says Herts, St Walden. But then the registrar will only put down what they are told and the minions will say what they are told to say.

This made me chuckle, on the 1911 census

    Claude George Bowes-Lyon
    Head
    Married
    Occupation: Landowner <- well I never :D

His daughter would probably never have married into royalty without land.

I'm probably committing treason here, but I read somewhere that she was adopted at birth by her parents and her birth mother was one of the servants called Margaret, hence Marquerite for her middle name and the reason for the mystery over her place of birth. It's probably only a rumour, why, I don't know and she certainly seems to have been well loved.

A note attached to a geni tree.......
    Lady Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon.
'The location of her birth remains uncertain but reputedly she was born either in her parents Westminster home at Belgrave Mansions, Grosvenor Gardens or in a horse drawn ambulance on the way to hospital, other possible locations include Forbes House at Ham Hill, London the home of her maternal grandmother, Mrs Scott. Her birth was registered at Hitchin, Herts near the Strathmore's country house, St Pauls Walden, Bury.'
