    I just wanted to thank you again for all of your help on the Hootons'. :) My uncle had a photo of some fellow with his wife and son and kept telling us that he was somehow related to Rose Ada but my Dad and I didn't have a clue who he was. Turns out it was Henry "Harry" Hooton's brother, John Thomas Hooton. We would never have found the connection if it wasn't for you guys so thank you so so much! :) {-(^^)-}

    Hi Kirsty

That's my photo! John Thomas Hooton is my great great grandfather. Harry (and I'm pretty sure he was Harry and not Henry) was his younger brother. My grandma was raised my John Thomas Hooton and his wife Georgina (nee Climpson). He was said to have a brother "in the Guards". John was the oldest in the family. He emigrated in 1892 (just after the English Census) - originally to New Zealand for a short spell and then came to Australia. He had one son - John Climpson Hooton - my grandma's father. Just today I found this article https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/...searchLimits=l-state=New+South+Wales|||sortby on Trove - it refers to "Grace, daughter of Henry Hooton , late of Hackney, London and John and Frank, sons of John Hooton of Bracebridge, Lincolnshire.... ." possibly Ada had a sister called Grace if the Henry Hooton is Harry. John is my great great grandfather and Frank one of his younger brothers. The family has been difficult to trace coming forward - they mostly seem to disappear into the ether. But it would seem by this advertisement Frank and Grace also emigrated to Australia.
Feel free to contact me for further information on the Hootons. Cheers !

Also in the 1911 census - it says that Rose was born in England!

Pretty sure this is the correct death. The Bedfordshire regiment (1st Division) was assigned to Ireland and then Malta. See this reference on Wikipedia
"On formation, the 1st Battalion the Bedfordshire Regiment was stationed at Newry in Ireland, while the 2nd was in India. The 1st Battalion remained on home service in England and Malta until 1889, when it sailed for India. " So it would make sense that Harry died in Malta. He would most likely have been sent there but his family remained at home.

In 1884, Gainsborough Lincolnshire is a birth for a Grace Ellen Hooton
1901 census 17 year old Grace E Hooton is living with her uncle William Hooton along with it looks like her brother Edward14 and sister Betsy 9. Also in the household is Elizabeth Hooton, Williams sister in law. She is 50 years of age. William is born, Morton Lincolnshire as is Grace. Elizabeth was born in Kirton Lindsey.
    111 page 20
1891 census, William is living with his brothers wife, Elizabeth along with his niece AM Hooton 18, Alfred Hooton 17, FW Hooton age 10, GH Hooton (Grace) 7 and EC Hooton age 10
    Page 2 RG12 2643/22
There is a marriage for a Grace Hooton to William Moulds 1939 Gainsborough.
I still haven’t figured out which brother of Williams is Elizabeth’s husband. Could it be Harry.

Not the same but Hartley Wintney was then and still is, quite a small village and Aldershot was then and still is the home of the British Army and a much larger place. Without looking I think it is fair to assume that HW fell within the Aldershot registration district so that would be place referred to on the formal record even if she was born in HW

    Hi Wendy
I think that it is Grace Emma Hooton - born 1872 in Hackney - her mother's name is given as Weyman. There a marriage in Hackney between a Henry Hooton and a Grace Weyman in 1871 in Hackney - so I feel these are the parents. Not sure where this Henry fits in but I suspect he is Harry, John T. and Frank's uncle. Am trying to check the census to see if I can locate him and where he was born.

Thank you so much for this information Megan - my apologies for the late reply - I have only just seen your on the board! I'll check out the article you posted a little later as I'm about to head out. So that must mean we are related - albeit it distantly!!! Kirsty

Hi Kirsty - just been revisiting the Hooton thing again. Three things -
    1) I have the marriage certificate of John Hooton and Anna Hadlow. They were actually married in Scotland. I can send you a copy of the full certificate if you are interested.
    2) I've reconsidered the newspaper link I sent you. I'm pretty sure the Henry Hooton mentioned is not your Harry but rather his uncle (i.e. the brother of John Hooton who married Anna Hadlow).
    3) The Hooton family seemed to have originally been called Picking. I saw this on other people's trees and have seen enough various documents to believe that it is correct. I've also got DNA links to people whose families stuck with the name Picking and min who stuck with Hooton. I cannot tell you however why the name change. My Grandma always said the Hootons were originally from Cornwall but I've never found any documentary evidence of that. The Picking/Hooton tribe were around Cambridgeshire and later Lincolnshire with some around Walsoken Norfolk too. Anyway I hope you find the above info helpful. I'd be interested to know if you've done any DNA tests too?

    Hi Megan,

Thanks so much for your message! I would love to see the marriage certificate for John and Anna. Thank you so much! You can attach documents and photos through this website or you can contact me at kmcclear(at)hotmail(dot)com

I also think you are correct - Grace is the daughter of Henry Hooton.

I have my DNA with Ancestry and My Heritage and have matches to both Picking and Hooton/Hooten families - mostly Hooton.
