I'm in a bit of a muddle, can anyone help? Christmas Hardy had a daughter Susannah, who when she died in 1814 in Milton Abbas, Dorset, said she was 65. Everything after her birth is well documented That makes her born about 1749. When she married she was of Grimstone. In Stratton with Grimstone, 3 Susannahs were born to Christmas and Elizabeth, in 1745, 1747 and 1749, and one with an un named mother in 1750 in Cerne Abbas There was 1 death of a Susannah Hardy in 1745, but it doesn't say if it was a child There were 2 deaths of Thomas Hardys to the same parents, in 1746 and 1750 i have seen them in the register online There was a bap of a Thomas in 1746 - 1st March, and according to a select death, in 1750 a bap 1st March 1747. (I think this might be a mistake?) A hint says Christmas married Elizabeth Tibs in Fordington 1738, if right that's 8 years before they had lots of children in succession which is odd So I sort of have too many Susannahs and Thomases to tally, and a strange gap before them. With a dad's name like that I thought they would be easier to spot. There are 2 Christmas deaths, 1767 and 1791, so at least 2 of them too
there seems to have been 4 susannahs 1745,1747,1749, and 1750 all for Christmas & Elizabeth last one is Cerne Abbas and has Elizabeth on the Baptism. It wasn't unusual to use same name after a child died. Trouble with our ancestors they had no imagination when it came to names!!
there is a Christmas baptised 4 Jan 1705 son of William & Suzana Hardey would fit in with a marriage in 1738 to an Elizabeth Tibs that's in Stratton just found another Susannah in Stratton in 1740 dau Christmas & Elizabeth!!
Stratton deaths I can see are Susannah 1745 Thomas 1746 Thomas 1750 Christmas 1767 Elizabeth wife of Christmas 1781 will look at other parishes later
Perhaps her real age was unknown and it was an approximate year of birth. I think after a son or daughter died they gave the next one the same name. Sometimes with burials an age is given - but so often it isn't ? . Where are you looking ? Can you check the original parish records? Often when a couple have been married for a good few years and no children. It is often stiilbirths, or children died very young.
Thank you, that is closer to the date of their marriage, which makes sense. Yes I am sure that most if not all Thomas and Susannahs are siblings. I think that the Susannah that lived could be 1749 as the Cerne Abbas one had siblings born there while others are dying in Stratton. So that leaves 4 Susanna born and 2 deaths, and 2 Thomas deaths and 1 born. But if the births start in 1740 in Stratton for this couple, why are there 2 records of Christmas being a constable in Fordington in 1740 and 1761 where they married? ( I think that was the dates but I'm on a tablet, daughter has commandeered the computer for her exam revision) Still a bit uncertain
Checked Ancestry - nothing different found - sorry. Looked at family trees too. there are only a few - they seem to have births for 1749 or 1750 again nothing useful found.
Have you tried the Dorset OPC site as well as lots of records the people there are very helpful worth a try
This Susannah 's previous siblings are being born in carne Abba at the same time as the other Thomas and Susannah s in Stratton, so I think there must be two families at the same time
