George Evans (my Gt Grandfather) 1842-1893 is buried in Weaste Cemetery Salford. Sarah Elizabeth Evans nee Sinclair (Gt Grandmother) 1845-1925 is buried in the same grave although she married again in 1897 to a Robert Brown c.1850. I was given information by a cousin that in the grave there is also Emma 1909 & Alice 1911 We think that they would be their grand-daughters who died & were the children of Emma Moss nee Moss & John Moss (my Grandparents). There is also a Thomas Scragg age 26 & Thomas Nuttall age 77. We haven't a clue who both Thomas's are. Neither George or Sarah were born in Salford, they were born Scotland & George was a journeyman painter/glazier. I have quite a lot of info on them both from their previous years & can't for the life of me tie the names Scragg or Nuttall in. Any help appreciated . Betty
George Evans was buried 1893 Sarah Brown formerly Evans 1925 Emma 1909 Alice 1911 I don't know when either of the Thomas's were buried The grave is in Weaste Cemetery Salford & is No.425 /37
On FreeBMD there's a Thomas Scragg died Salford registration district in 1900, age 26 making him born c1874. On the GRO Index there's a Thomas Scragg born Salford registration district 1873. Mother's maiden name Wolfenden. Also a Thomas Nuttall died Salford registration district 1916 age 77 making him born c1839. There were too many Thomas Nuttall's born in Lancashire in the time frame of 1838-1840 that I searched. Of course it doesn't mean to say I have found the right Thomas's. If you can find out the year both Thomas's were buried it would help?
Thank you Sis for trying to find this info for me although where I would find out when they were buried is practically impossible for me. Regards Betty
Not everyone buried in same grave are necessarily related unless you have a private grave which most people don't Sometimes you are lucky enough to find relatives together but more often not.
Oh! dear I have never heard that before. I have gone through our family tree & there are definitely no connections to the names Scragg or Nuttall. Even though George Evans was born Scotland I do know there were connections to Manchester via his Grandparents. There are no names though that tie up with the names Scragg/Nuttall.
My great, great Grandfather is buried at Ocklynge Cemetery. Unfortunately there is no headstone for him as the grave was classed as a common grave. In the grave also are John Pope and Fillippo Paciti. After the burial of John Pope, also a common burial, the grave was then purchased by the family of Fillippo Paciti - and the others are still in there with him....
Well it did look clearer until I tried to reckon the numbers .If as Sis posted earlier Thomas Scragg would have died c.1900 & Thomas Nuttall 1916.according to their ages it doesn't reckon up. George Evans (my gt grandad)was buried 1893 & Thomas Scragg 26 would follow in 1900.Then there would have been the 2 further burials of Emma Moss 1909 & Alice Moss 1911 (George's grand-daughters).After that Thomas Nuttall age 77 died 1916 & then Sarah(Georges former widow) in 1925. Doesn't make any sense at all & so the confusion carries on.
There is this site on the cemetary - perhaps a question to them might solve the mystery https://www.salford.gov.uk/births-marriages-and-deaths/cemeteries-and-crematoria/weaste-cemetery/
I tried to go in to this but it came up as unavailable. Will try again tomorrow as it may be closed down over the weekend.
If you google Weaste Cemetary there are plenty of 'hits' - the link I gave was part of the Salford City Council Site.
I will try again tomorrow. If need be I will phone Agecroft Cemetery where all the Salford Cemetery records are. I will also let you know if I get anywhere with my enquiry.
Thomas Scragg married in Chorlton December 1895 to either Mary Frances Jones or Alice Mary Evans. Will that help? I started scrolling through the Thomas Nuttall marriages but I'm afraid my house needs a good polish today. Sorry
I could not help myself..... Marriage of a Thomas Nuttall to either Ann Wright or Ann Moss 1865 Bury.
Hi Sue, Well this has helped me a lot. I found details of the Thomas Scragg marriage to Alice Mackay Evans 21st Dec 1895 at St Michaels Hulme (Chorlton reg district). Looking at my tree Alice was the daughter of George & Sarah Evans,& sister of my Gran Emma Evans. Thomas & Alice had a daughter Alice Wolfenden Evans bapt.1896. I have found also that Thomas Scragg was a Railway worker living in Salford in the 1881 & 1891c. Thank you so much p.s Now I will dig around re: Thomas Nuttall & Ann Moss Emma Evans married John Moss (connection? we will see)
And I just found that Alice McKay Scragg indeed married Thomas Nuttall, Salford in 1902 Ann Moss was a red herring......
