Harriet is my great-great-great-grandmother, and I'll start off with what I do know. She married William Henry Gill Junior on 23 May 1853 in the parish of St. John in Bethnal Green. Her father is recorded as Joseph Hill on the marriage certificate, but the clerk had must have had peculiar writing - I think it says 'tin-man' in the father's occupation column. Trying to pin down Harriet's birth has become quite the pickle. The censuses always say she was Poplar born-and-bred, but her birth year changes. Over the decades, the year jumps between 1825, 1829, 1830 and 1834, although I think I can rule 1834 out because her marriage says she was 'full age'. Can anyone solidify anything about her past for me, and try to dig into the Hill family? Ancestry.co.uk is being unreliable even when I do a vague search for her baptism.
How about. Harriet Hill or Hayes Father Joseph Hayes mother Mary Ann Hill 8/1/1833 St Luke Chelsea Family Search
Do you have her in 1841? This is the only one I can find in Poplar Page 11 HO107 702/8 All Saints Poplar Middlesex, Institution Jane Newy 40-44 Eliza Hill 14 born Middlesex Harriet Hill 12 " " Hannha Newy 2 John Wattson 70-74
No HILLs or GILLs at 20 Globe Road, Bethnal Green, in the 1851 census, 20 Globe Road being the address both gave on their parish register marriage entry in 1853. Looking at the names of the witnesses, one is Anne Maria GILL and the other could be Mary HILL. I don't think the latter is a GILL or GIBB but I could be mistaken. Following on from the 1841 census that Sue has found in the post above, could this marriage at St James Clerkenwell be relevant to your search: 11 March 1839 Dixon NEWEY, full age, bachelor, Butcher, 20 St John's Lane, father Robert NEWEY, Excise Officer & Jane HILL, full age, widow, 20 St John's Lane, father John OXLEY, Boat Builder. Marriage at Christ Church Tynemouth, Northumberland on 5 June 1817 of a Joseph HILL & Jane OXLEY - source Ancestry Select Marriages. Baptism at Christ Church Tynemouth on 9 December 1798 (born 15 November) of Jane daughter of John OXLEY & Alice ROBSON - source Ancestry & Family Search. John OXLEY, wife Alice & children (presumably) are in the 1841 census of Tynemouth (HO107/825/10, folio 38, page 21) and he is indeed a Boat Builder. There is a burial at Poplar on 15 June 1829 of a Joseph HILL, aged 33, which could be relevant. However, I am having no success at all at the moment finding the baptisms of either Harriet or Eliza. Nor much trace of the elusive Dixon NEWEY! And it is all still very speculative unless we can find the baptism of Harriet. Janet

Just in case it's relevant, an Emma Newey (full age!) married George Richmond in 1858 in Poplar, she was from Bromley and father Dixon Newey was a mariner
Found on a message board. Marriage of Robert Newey and Alice Dixon by banns 15th March St Peter and St Paul , Syston. Robert an excise officer. In the presence of Henry Dixon Oops didn't jot down the year.
Some other potential siblings of Harriet and Eliza, all parents Joseph and Jane: Jane Hill bap 15 April 1818 Tynemouth Jane Hill bap 31 July 1825 Poplar All Saints (born 14 June 1823) Sarah Ann Hill bap 31 July 1825 Poplar All Saints If the family are in an institution in 1841, perhaps they went in there after the death of Joseph in 1829. Perhaps this affected Harriet's baptism, and maybe Eliza's late baptism like Jane above
Sorry, having found it on Ancestry (Hannett Hile ) I realise they live on the High Street, not in a workhouse, so disregard what I said there
There is also a baptism for an Ann HILL 16.06.1822 , Poplar All Saints, to Joseph (Brazier and Tinman) and Jane HILL. Haven't come across baptisms for Harriet and Eliza yet either
Opening this thread back up because this brick wall is as frustrating as ever. Is the general concensus that the twice-widowed Jane Newey - formerly Hill - is Harriet's mother? Even with fresh eyes the trail created here seems a little confusing.
I've had to read it a few times too, but yes, I think that Jane Newey, formerly Hill, nee OXLEY is Harriet's mother, and that she married Joseph HILL in 1817, Tynemouth, then following his death married Dixon NEWEY in 1839. The 1851 census shows her born c1805, North Shields, Northumberland, but the baptism Tynemouth, Northumberland on 9 December 1798 (born 15 November) to John & Alice OXLEY (nee Robson) is likely to be the correct one. Her (Jane Oxley's) baptism says her father was a shipwright and was living at North Shields at the time of the baptism. Jane was their first daughter: Code: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DZ7S-CCV?i=255&cc=1309819&cat=1810509
