I have come across a 1911 census of a family that appears to be the family I am looking for, however, after establishing the mothers maiden name on the GRO index I have discovered that names have changed between the births being registered and the census. Is this common for families to have second thoughts about children's names? Is there a legal issue with changing names? The birth year appears to match with the census on the GRO but a completely different name.

    Registration district:- Newent
    Registration District Number:- 324
    Sub-registration district:- Newent
    ED, institution, or vessel:- 5
    Household schedule number:- 11
    Piece:- 15247

Mothers MN appears to be Meek and the entry I am particularly interested in is Leslie William Carter.

    Regards, Andrew.

I think I may have found the problem. I think the mothers name has been transcribed wrongly on Leslie's birth registration.

    Albert?
Maybe an error on completing the census form. As Dad is also Albert, slip of the pen?

I can't find Maudie Francis Cathleen either. I have done a search on the GRO for Surname Carter only and 1910 Newent and it gives me Lilian Edith Dorothy with MMN of Meek ??????

It is rather strange though. In another household there is a Gilbert Carter, son of Albert and Sarah Carter.

    His birth reg

    CARTER, GILBERT HARRY
    MEEK
GRO Reference: 1904 M Quarter in NEWENT Volume 06A Page 308

Strange in the fact that Albert Carter married Sarah Mary Price. So how Gilbert got the mmn MEEK I have no idea

Now that is very odd! The name is there in the original 1911 census but not registered until 1915? My conclusion is that some of the family were time travellers and I'm sticking to it lol!

It is written on the original register in Jan-Feb-Mar of 1910. This was probably filled in after she was registered in 1915.

They probably forgot to register her birth and remembered 5 years later.

That makes it a bit clearer now. How inconsiderate to future genealogists!
