Perhaps he called himself Charles to avoid confusion with his father. My m-I-l was known by a name totally unrelated to her real name, which was the same as her mother!

No afraid not. The earliest I can go back to with any certainty on that line is the marriage of my 3x great grandfather. He married in 1815 in Hopesay, Shropshire.
Probably, I think my 3 x grt grandfather was from Worcestershire according to the 1851 census (never been able to prove it though) but the name is originally from Wales.
