The 2nd Jeremiah was the only son of Jeremiah and Jane. His baptism has not been found and while the ages in the various census records put him as born c. 1800 I think he was a bit younger - maybe 1806.

I have what I believe is his marriage to Mary REES in Llanbister, Radnorshire on 16 Jun. 1826. Confirmation of this fact is in post #2. As for baptisms in or near Llanbister [based upon place of marriage] the only baptism I have found is for a Mary daughter of Thomas and Mary baptised [Non-Conformist] in Old Radnor on 11 Aug. 1805.

After finding the couple with their 6 children in 1841 census [see post #1] I was led [via post #4] to investigate census records in the U.S. BINGO!!!

1850 - Big Rock, Kane, Illinois - Jeremiah [age 50 a Farmer], Mary [age 44] and 4 of his original 6 children [Jeremiah age 20, Elizabeth age 16, Sarah age 13 and Jacob age 9]. The only discrepancy was the birth place of Jacob. In addition to theses were John age 7 and Louisa age 4. Both were born in the U.S. - John c.1843 in Pennsylvania and Louisa c. 1846 in New York.

1860 - Big Rock, Kane, Illinois - Jeremiah [age 60 a Farmer], Mary [age 54], Jacob [age 19], John [age 17] and Louisa [age 13]. Both sons worked the farm with their father and Louisa was likely in school.

1870 - Big Rock, Kane, Illinois - Jeremiah [age 70 a Farmer] and Mary [age 64]. Also with them were 3 grandchildren [???] - Elizabeth [age 11], Jeremiah [age 7] and Ellen Mary [age 6] - all born Illinois. It would appear that Jeremiah owned the farm [value $ 9,400.00] and had personal property [value $1,880.00].
His next door neighbour was his son John along with Hattie his wife [age 22] and daughter Elizabeth [age 1].

I have now found a tree that I think accounts for Jeremiah and Mary - but need to review details further.

This tree looks likely accurate - Jeremiah born c. 1799 and became quite successful in life in Big Rock.

Just spent several hours reviewing data on Jeremiah and Mary. Have 'discovered a story' on Ancestry which tells me Jeremiah emigrated to the U.S. in 1842.
This story makes reference to a brother of Jeremiah named Edward who had also emigrated to the U.S and settled in Big Rock, Kane, Illinois c. 1846. Edward helped Jeremiah to settle in Big Kane after he - Jeremiah - had spent 7 years in Penn. and New York. In 1849, Jeremiah became a Deacon in the Baptist Church and over the following years built up a successful farm of 225 acres.
He and Mary had 4 sons and 8 daughters - 3 sons and 5 daughters grew to adulthood. I have these 8 children but lack data on the 4 who died young.
    Jeremiah died 21 Oct. 1889 - born 25 Dec. 1799.
    Mary died 14 Apr. 1880.

This person has no information on the father of Jeremiah so is unable to assist me in developing the brother Edward.

I forgot to include that Edward's spouse was Miriam, so would be interested to know whether Edward arrived in the States with Jane and secondly married Miriam?

    Thank you.

Gerald, the 1841 census in England was held the night of 6 June 1841. The marriage to Miriam Williams in Kane, Illinois was on 29 August 1840.

Checking New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957 I believe I have found Edward [possibly with 2 brothers] arriving from Liverpool to New York. They arrived 9 July 1832 - ship "Mary Catharine". The surname on the manifest was WHILDEN and they were all Farmers from Wales - Edward [26], Robert [22] and Richard [20].

I think this is more likely my Jeremiah's siblings.

    And maybe, NOT!!!

I just can't get my head around this matter. I've got several "pieces of the jigsaw" but also some significant gaps that I cannot bridge.

Ann Whilding married 3 Apr. 1833 in St. Harmon. One of the witnesses was Jeremiah Whilding. For years I have been unable to to find the baptism of Ann.

Was this witness her father, brother or cousin[?] or some other connection?

For the most part I had reasoned that the witness was her brother born c. 1800 but also no baptism of him had been found. A marriage was held in Llanbister, Radnorshire between Jeremiah Whilding and Mary Rees on 16 Jun. 1826 and several children were born prior to the census held in 1841. The children were Jane [1828], Jeremiah [1830], Ann [1833], Elizabeth [1835] and Jacob [1841]. The family can be found in H0107/1455/10/20/9.
With some assistance from others on this forum, it was determined that Jeremiah and Mary along with their 5 children emigrated to the United States c. 1842 first settling in Pennsylvania - John Charles born 1843 - and then New York - Louisa born 1846. The family can be found in 1850 census, in Big Rock, Kane, Illinois. The name is WHEELDING. Jeremiah is a Farmer.

I have what I believe is their arrival in New York 5 Apr. 1842 on board "Siddons". His age is given as 40 and the surname is WHEEDON.

Over the following years, Jeremiah became successful in Big Rock and a biography of their son - John Charles - alluded to the father - Jeremiah - as a long-standing Baptist and member of the Church in Big Rock where he was a Deacon in 1849. What prompted Jeremiah to settle in Big Rock was the at the instigation of his brother - Edward - who had settled there in in 1846.

An Edward Whilding married a Mariam [sic] Williams in Kane on 29 Aug. 1840. I have not found this couple in 1850 census but did find them in 1860 and 1870. She died in 1874 and Edward died 29 Jun. 1881.

Edward arrive in the U.S. 9 Jul. 1832 on board "Mary Catharine". His name on the manifest was WHILDEN. He was aged 26. With him were 2 other young men named WHILDEN - Robert age 22 and Richard age 20.

Robert I have not yet researched.

Richard by the time of the 1840 census in Kane, was married and had a daughter under age 5. By 1850 census - when family members were identified - the family was living in Sugar Grove, Kane - surname WHELDING. By 1860 and then 1870 Richard and his wife - Louisa - were still in Sugar Grove - surname WHELDING [1860] and WHIELDING [1870]. His wife Louisa died 6 Jan. 1875.
Richard is a widower in 1880 - still living in Sugar Grove and died 3 May 1885.

If it is not to much trouble, I would like assistance in locating the baptisms of
Jeremiah c.1799 - possibly in Llandinam, Montgomeryshire
    Edward c. 1804 - ditto
    Ann - c.1808 - ditto
Robert c.1810 - baptism place unknown
    Richard c.1812 - ditto.

As Jeremiah [the eldest] later became active in the Baptist church in the U.S. I suspect that these baptisms may have been Non-Conformist.
