There is a Sophia Dove in Kilburn Street, St John Hampstead, Edmonton, Middlesex
working as a FS, age 19 (b1822) not born in county
    HO107 p674 bk9 f4 pg3

    Or perhaps more likely
    Ingate Street, Wangford, Beccles Suffolk
Sophia Dow age 20 (b1821) born in county with
    Elizabeth Chittleburgh (washerwoman) b1776
    HO107 p1039 bk4 f6 pg5

Another of my wonderings:rolleyes:, this time about Henry.

There is a bap for Henry Doe 28/4/1814 in Northwold (not a millions miles from Toft Monks;))
Father Robert Doe mother Frances Dye.
Source England Births and Baptisms 1538-1975 transcription.
It would be good to have a look at the original.

Could this be Henry born before Robert married Mary?

You can forget this - I found the original and it is not your Henry:headbang:, the incumbent helpfully entered all the mother's maiden names:), and this Robert is a thatcher.

I like that. I wonder if they are related?

I thought it's worth just recording the rest of the family in Gorleston in 1841> HO107 Piece 1029 Book 12 Folio 52 Page 29

I see there seems to be another son - Robert, age 21, Bricklayer. Of course he may be a relative.

Nothing to do with anything really, but this appeared in the Norwich Mercury of the 10th January 1834 (British Newspaper Archives)
    Lost on the 2nd ult
A Bright Bay Mare Pony, with dark hanging mane, switch tail, a white spot on her forehead, one on her nose, and two white saddle spots, two broken knees, and stands 13 hands high, the property of Robt. Dow, Toft Monks.

    Another couple of snippets -
    Ipswich Journal 6th October 1877
27th ult at Gillingham, by the Rev. E. H. Loring, Charles Hammond, eldest son of Mr S. Hammond, of Westhall, to Elizabeth Dowe, youngest daughter of the late Mr Robt. Dowe, farmer, Gorleston.

And I presume this one is certainly yours -
    Norfolk News 6th January 1855
On the 25th ult at Kingsfield, Suffolk, Mr Daniel Dowe, youngest son of the late Mr Robert Dowe, farmer, to Susanna, youngest daughter of Mr William Bartram, farmer of the above place.

Henry is the one who interests me, no baptism found and some considerable time before the marriage of Robert and Mary, and yet he becomes the head of the family on the death of Robert and lists all the other children as his siblings.
Henry is not listed with the family in 1841 eithero_O
I guess Muggy will have all of these but for those who have not looked these are the census entries from 1851 for the Dowe 'children'.
1851 HO107/1804/449/13 in Ringsfield, Wangford, Suffolk
1861 RG09/1185/156/10 in Ringsfield (FMP transcribed them as Daive)
    1871 RG10/1777/37/2 in Ringsfield
    1881 RG11/1899/51/1 in Ringsfield
1891 RG12/1489/74/4 in Ringsfield - Phillip is now head
1901 RG13/1800/35/2 in Ringsfield - Philip is now alone

I have always imagined Henry as the illegitimate child of Robert and Mary, for some reason the marriage being delayed ... But really have no idea

I have been thinking that Robert and Henry were one and the same person and thought he might be the illegitimate son of Mary. Maybe he became known as Henry so as not to confuse him with his stepfather?

I don’t want to get too far off piste but there are 3 Goldsmith baptisms on 26 February 1815 in Pulham St Mary (not a million miles from Bedingham & Ringsfield).

Children of Robert & Mary. Robert is a Bricklayer.

    1. Robert born 26 October 1805

    2. Benjamin born 15 August 1808

    3. Mary born 15 June 1811.

I’m not making any connections but the occupation is indicative.
