Please can someone explain why on England and Wales Civil Registration Birth Index records it says: Birth Registration Date (year) and then Re-registration (same year) Why register twice (apparently)? I'm sure there is a rational explanation, but right now I'm mystified and it's something I have only just noticed.
It could be because there was an omission or error in the first registration eg a middle name or perhaps the father's name to be added. What are the details please so that we can have a look.
That's what I thought too - at first. But then my OWN registration is the same and I'm pretty sure no late additions/corrections would have been needed. Though maybe an error was made in transcription from my birth certificate to the Index? A significant proportion of the records I have looked at have this registration/re-registration - though not all of them do. Edited to say .... I'm looking at records on Ancestry England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1916 - 2007 I'm not sure if you'll be able to view these if you don't have a subscription there. I would post a 'clipping' of the record but I can't quite see how to upload a file from my own laptop to here.
How odd. I have just checked the birth registrations for me, my brother and my parents. All were registered just the once. Mind you, although they were all registered in St Albans, Hertfordshire, Ancestry in its wisdom has the county variously as Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Huntingdonshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Go figure....
Actually if you have the snipping tool that comes with Windows 7 and higher you can take a snip, then select copy, then paste it into your reply. No need to upload a file.
Well, I have been having a rummage on Ancestry and think that it might just be a default box for all entries - peculiar to Ancestry - just in case there is a re-registration at any time. If there isn't, it would just default to the year of the only registration. If there is (for whatever reason eg father being added) then there is a box for the year to be recorded. If you look at the GRO original indexes of registers, if there is a re-registration, it will be annotated along the lines of "See March quarter 1926" against the original entry of 1913, for example. If you see what I mean....
Yes. I do see what you mean. Thank you, Jan. So generally speaking would you agree that the existence of a re-registration date the same as the original registration date actually means 'this is correct, nothing has been added or changed'?
Thank you for your help. I had originally been hoping it might mean that a change had been made in the same year as the first registration, but that now doesn't seem to be the case. Back to the drawing board then.
I would but it seems as if one can only check up to 1917 and whilst the clipping I posted above was just a 'random' example what i want to check is a birth after that.
Thank you for the heads-up about FreeBMD, but from what I have seen there it's not - immediately - apparent whether a registration has been modified later. Well not that I have noticed when I have used it before. No matter. I think I have probably figured out what was making me question something about a birth registration and led to my query here - and it turned out to be nothing to do with re-registration. But thanks for all the help anyway.
Usually, on FreeBMD, if it is a late entry or has been modified, it will say:- Births Sept 1921 If you want to see the original document you need to click on the glasses (pair of spectacles) to the right of the entry. Looking at the original for this birth, it is written at the bottom of the page. Whereas all the others on the page are typed. The entry for this birth looks like it was a late registration. At the end it says 'See M37' (March 1937) Births Mar 1937 Trinder Jean H - Andrews - Pershore 6c 288 As the first entry for this birth would have been in 1937, it looks as though whomever copied the entry to the bottom of the 1921 page made a mistake with her first name and wrote Joan instead of Jean.
Or the typist in 1937 typed Jean instead of Joan? Jane (or am I really Jean? or Janet?) Dyslexia Rules, KO?
