    Hi everyone
My great grandmother Elizabeth Ann Johnston was born in Pennsylvania 1876 . Her parents, Catherine Callaghan 1850 and Michael Joseph Johnston1849 were born in Ireland and married in Lancashire in 1873. Elizabeth and her elder sister, Mary Ellen 1875 were both born in Pennsylvania, which is all the information I can find on any records. The small family must have moved back to England towards the end of the 1870s because there are at least 3 more children born in Huddersfield UK. Catherine dien in 1888 and the 1891 uk census shows Michael as a widow. I would love to find out where my great grandmother was actually born and any possible reasons for their migration

James's birth was registered in the June quarter of 1880, so I was hoping to find the family in the 1881 census, but no luck so far... :(

There seems to be a Florence in the mix, too, born Huddersfield 1878, mother's maiden name Callaghan - but I can't find any of them in 1881 so far.

(Ah. Florence died in infancy, same year).

Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate? It should name their respective fathers with their occupations, which might help a search on the Irish side of things.

    • I did find this information. This could be why you aren't having any luck. Family search has some records but I can't find any for your family

1891 census has him as a fish salesman and in 1901 he is a firm salesman, that could also be fish salesman with bad writing.
I think the James B age 10 in 1891 could be Bernard in 1881 born 1880
    Yes, James Barnard June 1880

I am bamboozled! Why did the young couple go to The U.S.? They were married in Lancashire. They were both from Ireland. Did they go over as soon as they were married to start anew in the hope of getting ahead and escape the potato famine. They were married in 1873 and their first child was not born until 1875?? which seems unusual for back then?Did Michael go over first. I cannot find any immigration or emigration records for them at all.
Hi Archie's Mum I love it here pure country
