Mary Ann wed George FLORY on 12th June 1859 at St James', Clerkenwell. In the 1861 census, her birth place is noted as Middx (piece 179, folio 24, page 7 - surname FLORA ), which is not terribly helpful. In the 1871 census, her birth place is noted as Hampstead Road, Middx, which is equally as helpful. Mary Ann died in 1868, so only these 2 censuses to go by. Mary Ann's father was a Thomas MERRITT, the marriage certificate stating that he was a Coachman. I would appreciate any help in nailing her down in 1851 and 1841, please. Many thanks,
I think that I have found her in 1851: 1508/477/36 But, as she is an 18-year-old servant in a household other than her own - and the place of birth is just London - I cannot be 100% sure...
Sadly, she will not show up in the RDs as she was born 1832/3ish - before registration. Sorry, I forgot to mention earlier... I have searched for PRs for her baptism, but no luck there either...

Maybe she's like my gr. grandmother and didn't have a named father when baptized so invented a father for her marriage.
I note a death of Thomas Merrett in 1856 St Pancras. Age is 45 Searching for Thomas bc1810 in 1841, found a Thomas and Isabella Merritt in St James Clerkenwell, in an Institution of some kind, no children
There's a Mary Merritts, with possible Sister Martha, possible mother Mary, in Holborn HO107 671/37/6
Good news and bad news Jan. I'm certain that this refers to the parish of St James, Hampstead Road, St Pancras (now Camden). It was an independent parish from 1793 and so in a London census it would be as distinct as, say, St Clements, St Giles etc. The bad news is that the surviving Baptism Registers only appear to cover 1851-1953 (in London Metropolitan Archives). I'm sure you really don't want a map of the church but I'll toss one in as it's quite a pretty one (in the bottom right hand corner of this where it's still called a chapel> http://mapco.net/stmaryle/stmaryle11b.htm ).
I've been trying to find more information on Henry Gun(?) and Matilda Dear who married in South Hackney 1st July 1866. Matilda's father is Thomas Merritt, Coachman - far too much of a coincidence for me not to try to find out more....but I've drawn a complete blank. Could someone else have a poke around - it ought to be gold!
You might find this interesting, although it doesn’t help with your original query. I saw that the Florys were living at 188 Strand in 1861 so looked it up. I found Code: https://londonstreetviews.wordpress.com/2016/01/18/samuel-fisher-cutler/ It doesn’t mention the Florys, but it does tell you who the family were to whom Mary Ann was housekeeper, along with a lovely watercolour of the property. This is a very interesting site which I haven’t come across before, which, although it is based on London Street Views by John Tallis (1838-1847) contains a lot of information on the people who lived and worked in the buildings covered by the book - and there are loads of illustrations
Not that it helps any, but a fair few Merritts appear in nearby St Mary,Marylebone Road, but I've not seen a Thomas as yet
If I've got this right It seems until 1852 when the burial ground closed St James Hampstead Road was a chapel of ease for St James Piccadilly (whose burial ground it was). So wouldn't any records be with the Piccadilly records?
Yes, I noticed that connection as well although I must say I dismissed it when I read that St James (Hampstead Road) was designated as a separate parish in 1793. Fortunately (or otherwise!) FMP has St James's Piccadilly Baptisms on its Westminster website: unfortunately I can't see any likely Merritt entries.
I've been playing around with this trying to find something, anything, but the only thing I've come up with is that it was a Henry GURR who married Matilda Dear and the two witnesses of the marriage were Henry's daughter by his first wife (Caroline Grisley, died 1859), Mary Ann, who married Frederick Francis Meek in 1843. I can't find a marriage of a Matilda Merritt to anyone called Dear.
