Thomas Davenport/ Devenport

Thomas Davenport was born to Thomas and Ann in 1802 at St Mary Newington, Southwark, and nothing more is known

But I have a suspicion that he may be the Thomas Devenport, deceased mariner, who is the father of Mary Ann Devenport at her marriage

She married Henry Ongley in 1842 at St Peter Walworth, I think she was 16 if I'm right, although it doesn't say so, as in later censuses with Henry she's born 1826 in Camberwell
There is a possibility if that's true that in 1841 she is age 15 with her mother, also Mary Ann age 45, at George Street, St Giles Camberwell

So my question is can anyone find any other record of him, or Mary Ann's baptism, to see if they are the same man? Thank you

I saw your Thomas Baptised 16 Aug with two brothers no 2nd name mentioned.

 

Thank you but I'm not sure, I don't recognise the witnesses and I haven't found any more records of a likely Thomas William to see. As you found, he was baptised with no middle name

 

If he was in fact a mariner he may have married-or no- anywhere. Possibly bought his family to his home base or they may have followed him.

 

Have you lost your Thomas completely after his birth?

 

Yes, unless it is him who pops up as the father to Mary Ann, but dead

 

Three other brothers baptised the same day at St Mary Newington: William born 21 April 1804, Henry born 27 December 1806 and John born 30 May 1815, parents Thomas & Ann DAVENPORT, New Street East Lane, Labourer.

Brother Henry looks as if he married at St Mary Newington on 2 July 1827 to a Mary Ann HALL, one of the witnesses being Ann DAVENPORT - his mother? Brother John looks to have married a Catherine, is a Costermonger, and is still living at New Street in the 1861 census of St Mary Newington (RG9/343, folio 35, page 29). There is a Henry DAVENPORT living at New Street, St Mary Newington in the 1841 census.

Thomas DAVENPORT senr looks to have been buried at St Mary Newington on 9 September 1825, he being shown as of New Street and aged 40.

None of which helps to find your Thomas DAVENPORT who seems conspicuous by his absence after his baptism. Nor can I find a baptism for Mary Ann I'm afraid.

My reason for asking is that there is a number of Thomas Davenports transported and one a soldier to West Australia in 1853 with his wife Mary and family.

I have found most of his siblings in later life, but no clues there so far

There is one Thomas Davenport sentenced at Middlesex Session of Peace in 1817 but I can’t access NSW convicts to check his age.

Thanks, I've googled it and it comes up in a few places, but no other details. I don't understand how it works with convicts, is there anywhere else I can look look to see any more about this Thomas?

Also, what is a session of peace?

 

Quarter Sessions I think held by Justices of the Peace.
I can’t look at NSW convicts as I don’t have a sub. Some kind person here may be able to check for you.
I did see a death but parents were unknown.

 

Found him on FMP, but absolutely no more information to help identify him.

P.S. Found him elsewhere and he was age 42.

Thomas Davenport, Wollombi, money’s received 16s, payments made 15s 4d moneys in Savings account. No further assets.
I did find a death for a Thomas Davenport but darned if I can find it now but if this is your Thomas then,his age, mentioned by @Sis would make him 42 at death.
He received his certificate of freedom in 1824

 

I'm out at the moment, but I did find a death in South Australia. Can't remember when it was but do remember there was no other details, unless you bought a copy. But probably not him.

 

This Thomas seems to be Thomas Davenport transported on the Heroine in 1833. In 1837 he was 55 years of age and was ticket of leave man. He drowned in the Hunter River in December 1842. So much too old to be your Thomas.

 

Having done a bit of DNA sleuthing, I think that the idea that Thomas's daughter was Mary Ann is not correct. So perhaps he was the Thomas transported on the Larkin after all.

If so then the only thing I can find apart from his free certificate (free by servitude) 1824, is that in 1822 he was assigned as a servant to Hugh Hughes, wheelwright, ex Alexander First Fleet. Hugh Hughes was the only wheelwright on the First Fleet. "The Wheelwright, made right"
