This lady married my 3rd cousin 3x removed Reginald Henry Hulbert at Camden Town, 25 Mar 1894
She claimed her father was John, a railway porter.

On censuses following her marriage she is said to be born in St Pancras. There is a birth registration Jun 1874 in neighbouring Marylebone RD

I have been asked to help identify her parents by an Ancestry contact. So I went to the GRO, and found there is no mother's maiden name, so think she is illegitimate and invented the father

I cannot find a baptism to help confirm my suspicions. But in 1881 she is living with James and Mary Jackson, enumerated as their niece (Emma Hallow). I can't find an 1891 census for her.

Before I go back to tell my contact to order the birth certificate I thought I would ask if anyone can pinpoint a baptism or an 1891. I also haven't yet worked out how she is related to James and Mary Jackson, I didn't find a marriage between James Jackson and Mary Hallows.
Edit: i checked a couple of births in the GRO seems she was Mary Wootton, though i can't see a marriage.

    :( Have looked all over.

The only other thing I can find for her is that she was a witness at her "cousin" Ellen Jackson's wedding to William Henry Alderwood on 2 August 1891, where she signed her name as Emma Jackson Hallows.

Incidentally, William H. Alderwood was a witness at Emma's wedding in 1894.

Not any help, but there is another Hallows birth in Marylebone (no mother's maiden name) in 1870.

    Amy Stuart Hallows.

She can be found in the 1871 census as a Nurse Child in the house of David and Rebecca Davidson.

She married in 1895 Marylebone - I think it was to George William Davies, but can only find them on the marriage index - no marriage cerificate found as yet.

It looks as if James JACKSON may have been married before if the 1871 census of St Pancras is to be believed (RG10/245, folio 22, page 44) where his wife is shown as Emma, both of them being born in Potterspury, Northamptonshire, together with children Henry & Ellen both born in St Pancras. However, both of these children have mother's maiden name of WOOTTON on the GRO, so is their mother a Mary or an Emma?? Needless to say, I cannot find a marriage between James JACKSON and either Emma or Mary WOOTTON! All their children shown in the 1881 census have the mother's maiden name of WOOTON or WOOTTON, so where is son Charles in the 1871 census, his birth being registered at Potterspury reg district in 1865?

Ah, have found James JACKSON in the 1891 census of Kentish Town, St Pancras (RG12/132, folio 116, page 49), wife has now reverted to Emma again, and both born in Potterspury together with children Henry, Ellen & William Thomas plus a lodger Wm HARRISON - no sign of Emma HALLOWS.

Oh cripes, this is getting complicated! Emma WOTTON was baptised at Potterspury on 26 August 1838, daughter of Harriot WOOTTON, single woman in the service of the Duke of Grafton. Perhaps a bingo moment here. Harriet WOOTTON married a John HALLAS on 6 September 1841 at Potterspury - image available to view on Ancestry. So could this be a tenuous connection to the John HALLOWS supposedly your Emma's father according to her marriage record?? Have to stop now, but will pick up later if nobody else finds out anything more in the meantime.

    Next instalment coming up!

1851 census of Islip, Oxfordshire (HO107/1729, folio ?, page 1):
    Town End

John HALLOWS Head Mar 30 Railway Engine Driver Lancashire Eccles
Harriet do Wife Mar 35 Northamptonshire
    Potterspury
Emma do Daur in law Un 12 Lace Maker do do
Margaret do Daur 4 Bucks Wolverton
Ellen do Daur 3 do do
Harriet do Daur 2 do do
John B do Son 6 months do do

John HALLOWS looks to have died sometime between the 1851 and 1861 census records because Harriet nee WOOTTON has now become Harriet LIVINGSTON wife of William and they are living in Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire, with children Mary Ann, John, William & James plus stepdaughter Margaret HALLOWS.

I have found Margaret HALLOWS in the 1881 census of Willesden, Middlesex, described as an unmarried Cook living in the household of Walter BRODIE & family but have not managed to find her so far in the 1871 census. So I wonder could it be that your Emma HALLOWS is the illegitimate daughter of one of the daughters of John & Harriet HALLOWS? This could explain the relationship between James JACKSON, his wife Emma nee WOOTTON, and your Emma HALLOWS.

Following through on this theory, there is a burial for an Ellen HALLOWS at Wolverton on 23 July 1854, she being shown as aged 7 - so definitely not Ellen as a candidate for Emma's mother. I wonder if some sort of disease ripped through the HALLOWS family as Harriet was buried at Wolverton on 31 July 1854, aged 5. John HALLOWS was buried at Wolverton on 24 January 1855, aged 34. So if my theory is correct, Margaret HALLOWS is the only candidate left to be the mother of your Emma. So where is she in the 1871 census?

This family is fascinating! I cannot find a marriage between Harriet nee WOOTTON to a William LIVINGSTON/LEVINGSTON but have found the marriage of daughter Margaret HALLOWS at Holy Trinity, Haverstock Hill, Camden, on 3 October 1885 and she marries, wait for it, a George WOOTTON son of an Edward WOOTTON, George being 10 years younger than she is - image available to view on Ancestry. Margaret WOOTTON buried 29 January 1898 at St Pancras Parish Chapel, aged 51, of 34 Hawley Road, so why can't I find her in the 1891 census? Frustration rules!!

Bit more information on George WOOTTON. Born c1857 at Potterspury, Northamptonshire and he is resident in Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire in the 1881 census, shown as boarding in the household of an Elizabeth HAYNES at 51 Goddard Street together with what could be brothers William & Edward WOOTTON. So that could be how Margaret & George met if they didn't already know one another through the WOOTTON of Potterspury families. And needless to say, I cannot find George & Margaret in the 1891 census any more than I can find Emma HALLOWS. So both crucial census records of the 1871 and 1891 are missing or so badly transcribed that I cannot find Emma or Margaret on them using both Ancestry & FMP - can anyone else?

Oh well found MM! How did I miss that one. I have been having some problems with FMP but it now seems to be up and running again. Fingers crossed that the birth certificate solves the problem.

I cannot claim to have found it - I found a tree on Anc for Margaret and that had the census 1871 ref on it - I then looked for the marriage of Alice to Thomas and found the maiden name.

I still cannot get on FMP though:mad:

Alice ALLOWS (sic) was visiting William & Mary WOOTTON & family at Potterspury in the 1851 census, so that explains why she wasn't with John & Harriet in the 1851 census. I do like to dot the i's and cross the t's!

And William and Mary are Harriet's parents, I think Emma (who married James Jackson) was with them in 1841.

Found the marriage to James in 1864 ..

And wouldn't you just know it, Ancestry do not have the parish register or bishops transcripts marriage images of Potterspury online for these dates. Bishops transcripts go up to 1852 but parish register images are missing 1838-1867.

Think you will find mothers name wasn't added until 1912, so doesn't mean she was baseborn...
