Sydney was born in 1863 (59) and Mary Ann was born 1872 (50) Going back a bit to the 1911 census we find Mary Ann at home with her mother Mill Green Knighton, Radnorshire, Wales Mary Baker, Head, Widow, 1847, Newtown, Montgomery Mary Ann Baker, Daughter, Single, 1873, Knighton, Radnorshire William Edward Baker, Grandson, 1897, Stowe, Shropshire Reginald Jenkins, Adopted Child, 1906, Dolau, Radnorshire Dolau (pronounced locally as Dolly should be Doll-I) falls within the Knighton registration district. 1939 register 3 Mill Green , Knighton, Radnorshire, Wales Sydney J Hughes, 25 Oct 1863, Married Mary Ann Hughes, 16 Oct 1872, Married Reginald J Baker, 8 Nov 1905, Single Knowing that Reginald was born in Dolau in 1905 I looked for a birth under Baker (just in case he was Mary Ann's illigitimate child) and also under Jenkins but have drawn a blank. Using the FreeBMD I did a search on just Reginald born in Knighton in1905 and got a hit. Births Dec 1905 Whittall, Reginald Jenkins, Knighton, 11b, 116 Using the GRO main site I got WHITTALL, REGINALD JENKINS Mother's maiden name: - GRO Reference: 1905 D Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 116 I've searched for a Reginald Whitall in the 1911 census and none come up. Do you think I have this right?
One thing Terry, on the CWG entry it says "foster-son of Mrs. M. A. Hughes, of Knighton, Radnorshire", not step-son. Your theory makes sense, but the big question is - where does the Whittall come from? All your references seem to refer to the same chap, he must have been very confused if he had to cope with all those variations of his name..... The only thing I have found which might just be of use, is a question posed on the Royal Air Force Commands forum Code: http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?11553-imformation-needed Although the question was asked in 2011, looking as the profile of the chap who asked the question, he last seems to have accessed the forum on the 14th September......would it be worth you joining up and asking him what his interest is?
Thank you Ann, of course your right, he was foster son, don't know why I put step son. That link tells me the name of the chap researching. I have recently become friends with him on facebook as we are both researching the fallen in the wars. I will contact him and ask if he has any further info. Thank you very much.
Have sent him my findings and he is sending me some findings on another soldier who died in WW2 I'm now doing men who fell in WW2, having finished WW1. Mine is small fry compared with his, I'm just doing for Knighton, he is doing the whole of Radnorshire

I will just throw this in:- 1901 census RG13/5183/82/1 - Tynyberth, Llanfihangel Elsie W Jenkins age 13 niece to head William Layton Grocer/Postmaster b1888 Cregrina Radnorshire She is with the same family in 1911, where Tynyberth is listed as Dolau Road, Llanfihangel RG14 PN33681 SN21 Elsies pob is now given as Radnor LLanbadarngarreg Lots of co-incidences Elsie would have been 16/17 in 1905 I will try and find her in 1891.
Think you've clubbed her on the head When I wrote Lyne Berth I wasn't sure, it also looked like Tyny Berth. It was the L in Llanbister that confused me. Although, looking at them side by side I can see they are totally different.

There is a birth registration of an Elsie Whittall J WHITTALL in the December quarter of 1887 in Builth. Need to find a marriage of a sister of Martha? Beaten again, but by Jan this time. Must be getting slow in my old age
Oooh 1891 census RG12/2067/96/4 Elsie W Jenkins age 3 is living with her grandfather Richard Wheldale (FMP transcription - it is hard to read) in Letton, Weobly, Herefordshire

There is a birth registration for an Elsie Whittall J. Whittall on FreeBMD in the December quarter of 1887 in Builth. Looking at the GRO index for a mother’s maiden name, her name is recorded as Elsie Whittall Jenkins Whittall - with no father’s name. So you pay your money and you take your choice as far as Elsie’s ‘real’ surname goes You just beat me to it Terry
Eureka! 1881 census for Richard Weldale and the surname is ---- Whittall RG11/5454/51/1 daughter Martha is age 11
