Lives of the first world war website

This may have been already mentioned but is new to me. While googling a conscientious objector's name I was taken to this site which gave free access to a transcription of his record. I had to create a free account first. It also has records which cost money to view.

There are various records on this site which are available elsewhere eg Canadian attestations - but this is another way to access them. It is run in association with FMP. However when I keyed in the above CO's name to FMP's main site it did not come up.

I haven't explored the site in any detail but thought it might be of interest.

 

Ah - it is organised by the Imperial War Museums.

here are 5 lists of the servicemen and women (soldiers, seamen, R.A.M.C. nurses etc.) who feature in Nurse Dora Townsend’s autograph album. There are just a few others, whose signatures I have not been able to decipher.

I have supplied the date, rank, regiment, place, ship name etc., where possible, and for anyone spotting an ancestor, I can supply a digital image of the relevant page. I’ve posted in this thread because the ‘Lives of the First World War’ website is an excellent resource, and may have details of some of the people on my lists. I shall be adding facts about and leaving a poppy for my own grandfather in due course.

'Come into the Garden Maud', was a Victorian parlour song, based on a poem written by Alfred Lord Tennyson (many moons ago we had a copy on a 78, played on the wind up grammophone - just listened to it again on utube, played on a wind up machine)

 

I still have my grandmother's old Alba wind up machine, bah!

 

Victor J. Pottow appears in the Windsor and Eton Express of the 8th October 1910. Under the heading


his name appears as having passed passed 1st Class Freehand Drawing and 1st Class Model Drawing. The picture says it all.
