Never heard of it and hope sincerely never to need it. Re our earlier, I cannot for the life of me think why anyone would ever want to go there, apart from the things you mention Sue there never seems to be an ounce of space on the beach. Nah! Not pour moi. :D

Hmmm - I see two problems with that:

    1. Why would the locals give away their best-kept secrets? Wouldn't they just "tell you where to go" in the other sense of the phrase? :sceptical:

    2. What happens when a tourist's openness to new experiences (aka gullibility) collides with a local propensity for mischief-making?

To illustrate the latter, the city of Oxford, being Oxford, is most of the time awash with tourists from all over the world. One of the sights, or at least a convenient rendezvous point, is the Martyrs' Memorial at the southern end of St Giles. For Inspector Morse fans, this is the pointy thing sticking up skywards outside the Randolph Hotel.

It used to be said that students would hang around near the memorial in order to tell the tourists some of the secret history that the guide books omitted: this wasn't just a memorial, they said, but the spire of a long-lost cathedral, which had gradually sunk into the ground. Nevertheless, it was still intact, and its splendours could be seen by the enlightened few.

All they needed to do was walk a few yards along Magdalen Street (the eastern branch, beside the walls of Balliol College), where there was a small fenced-off enclosure with steps leading down into the ground. The steps turned a corner at the bottom, so you couldn't see right into it from ground level, but this was in effect a portal into a mysterious world of beauty and awe-inspiring craftsmanship.

It isn't known how many followed these instructions, but those who did will never forget the experience. For as they descended the staircase and turned the corner, they found themselves in....

    (wait for it...)

    the public conveniences. :D

The gentlemen's conveniences at the Philharmonic pub in Liverpool are actually Grade I listed (and I've been in there).

Google them... they are rather grand.

Just curious is my guess. After all it’s only in recent years that I discovered what that ‘thing’ looked like. That was only because I walked into one accidentally and a man was ‘standing’ there. I backed out in one big hurry.

    Oops
I can remember when I was a little girl, I was out with my Mum and I wanted to go to the loo. I seem to think that we only had a short time before we had to catch a train and my Mum was a bit flustered - you can guess what happened.....she led me into the gents  All I can remember of the experience is a man’s voice booming out ‘Madam, this is not the ladies’ and before my curiosity got the better of me, my Mum beat a very hasty retreat.

Home at last. Safe and sound but with a few minor issues that will probably diminish with rest.
Thank you all for your wonderful support.
