Hello, I'm trying to find details of James Winch. She was christened in Harefield in 1800. I don't know when it was or who his parents were. Any details on James or his family would be great. James killed himself in 1840 - it was featured in newspapers - but I don't know the exact date. It was in the Uxbridge district. I'd appreciate any help! Adam
The closest I can find is a James Winch baptised 9 Mar. Pts James & Margaret at St Mary the Virgin, Harefield, Hillingdon, Middlesex, England. If he took his own life I doubt he'll get a mention in burials. Not that I saw & newspapers nil, but FMP is better for that. Family Search has several marriages for a man of that name but anyone's guess if one of them is your man.
That's terrific! Thanks. James killed himself on the 17th of July 1840 - this can be deduced from the newspapers referring to the incident in relation to publication. His wife Sarah died there in 1886. Can you find a burial for her, or anything else on James' parents?
I am not a member on FMP, but had a look in their newspapers anyway. Two suicides are mentioned the first is /was a stud groom to his brother in law. He also is noted as the son in law of a foreman of the Jury. The 2nd seems to be at 'wickenbam'. perhaps in Ireland? It would be worth buying a months sub. to sort these out perhaps. edit: okay you came online while I was typing. I'll have a looksee.
I've read the article. He died at Ickenham, just like the man who was related to his boss. It doesn't make for very pleasant reading.
James was married to a Sarah, born in Hayes in 1796. I don't know when or where they married but Sarah lived in Ickenham up to the 1881 Census, and then died in 1886 in the same district.
This line frustratingly died with James, although the name of his parents (James and Margaret) were established, and I found their burials too. There was no marriage for them, but it would’ve been pre-1800 (and apparently not in Harefield). Nor were any christenings found
Have you tried a email to Uxbridge Library (local heritage dept). They are very helpful and I think they have the St Mary Hayes PR's I have tried to look at them on Ancestry but the actual registers are chaotic and I think the library will have the transcriptions - if Sarah was from Hayes, St Marys would be her parish church and likely where she married. With James Winch's parents marriage - have you looked in Hertfordshire or Buckinghamshire? Harefield is near to the boundary of both.
The James baptised at Harefield in 1800 found by Wendy might be the James Winch on the 1851, born Harefield, living in Abbots Langley, a Blacksmith with wife Ann.
Not sure where Elmstone Kent is in relation to where you are looking but a James Winch married Sarah Ann Squire there in March 1831.
So born around 1771.......we have a selection. But in Sittingbourne there are two. Brothers. The first in 1771 and then another in 1775. Father John mother Sarah......so far...still trying to find another fit. Oops think I read that wrong Mollymay. You must be referring g to James father. But the James baptised in 1800is till alive in 1851.
On the 1851 census HO0107/1697/396/18 Sarah b1796, Henry b1829, George 1832 plus a married niece Harriott Norman b1831 Denham Buckinhamshire March qtr 1850 Harriet Winch married William Norman (Uxbridge 3-355) The marriage happened at Ickenham and the image is on Anc. Harriet's father is John Winch - so this could be a brother to James
I have a transcription of the PR's for Denham marriages 1569-1812). I cannot see any Winch ones in the late 1790's - 1812 but there is one earlier which might just be worth noting Jas Winch (bricklayer) Edy Dodd 18th November 1773 - so allowing for some discrepancies with the age at death for James (who married Margaret) this could be his parents
