I was thrilled to find an old carriage lamp for sale at our local St Vincent de Paul shop and grabbed it up before anyone else found it. It looks original to my uneducated eye but I'd like to find out something about its history or age or anything really. There is a coat of arms on the backing board (to do with the patent) but no manufacturer's name.

I'd be interested to know if anyone here knows how to trace patents or how to determine the age of the lamp.

I taken photos and will post them here once I've downloaded them from my phone. Too tired to take it any further tonight but will be back tomorrow, all being well.

In the meantime - please put on those thinking caps. It will be interesting to see where we end up.

@Philippa I believe you are on FB and I am sure if you search groups on there you will find one dedicated to such things. I am on one for Ontario and see some neat things. At least there may be some one on there who could tell you how to authenticate it. Good luck and I for one look forward to your photos.!
PS. The other day your avatar was under conversation..to me..every time I first glimpse it I think it is a big white bra :oops: ( Must be my eyes! I do have new and expensive glasses!)

Thank goodness for that, once I got it into my brain that it was a big white bra, I just couldn’t get it out - even though I finally worked out it was Daffy Duck

I thought it was a map of Canada, so much for my new glasses

On the subject of coach lamps, the program 'Money for Nothing' had one from the tip & a very clever fellow transformed it into a clock, complete with eagle on the top, think it sold for about £450 :D

Well, if it’s a big white bra then it’s a tight fit. Stretched till it might snap the clips.

I have a house full of antiques so love your find! Usually I go online with a name or description like Mikejee to find out if I struck gold or not, lol!

As for your Avatar, I have worse eyesight than Sue so had no clue what it was! Just a Rorschach test? :D

Thank goodness for TD - you always make me laugh.

Can't see the bra (except out of the corner of my eye) but I guarantee I'll never look at Daffy the same way again. Might have to find an alternative. Hmmmmm

Anyway, to business. Here is one of the photos. The others seem to have vanished. Will try again in a minute.

    CarriageLampTM.JPG

This was secured to the board where the lamp was mounted. You can't see in the photo, but on the red shield in opposing corners (top right, lower left) is the letter H. In my original post I was confused between trade marks and patents - sorry.

(Don't you love the way it's secured by upholstery tacks?)

As there's the crown and lions feature I guessed it would be either a British trademark or at least from one of the Commonwealth countries. Might be wrong of course, but it's a start.

    Know anything about identifying trademarks?

Off to find the other photos but will have to wait until later in the day. Himself is ready to go out for his daily escape from the four walls. :(

Sometimes there is a "maker's mark" stamped in an out of the way place.

Lovely!! I saw some of that type online. I had inputted 1826 trademark and coach/carriage lamp.....a lot on eBay and they were all 19th century. Good luck.

I hunted one time for an original oil painting given to my dad by his company on retirement (old Tyrolean man with pipe) and had numbers, names and all that stuff. Even the price. Laughed when I saw the artist's work....this wasn't worth much more and dad retired in 1970 or so. Never liked the darn thing anyway. Do not like those fishermen in sou'westers avec pipe in mouth either...sigh. :(

As far as I can tell, Barb, there's nothing stamped on it at all, and I've even had the oil reservoir out to check. I'll have to go over it again with a magnifying glass and in good light.

Back to the registered trade mark "coat of arms", I forgot to mention the letter H is in gold capital letters and the other opposing squares contain a 5 pointed star, also in gold. Around the 4 red squares is a gold trim which I thought may have had writing on it. Closer look - equally spaces 0's or O's.

Since I bought it I have looked at so many photos of carriage lamps, carriage lights, buggy lamps/lights. early motor vehicle lamps/lights that the thought of it makes me cross-eyed. The closest I came to it was one from the US which also has a very graceful eagle on top of the three tiered chimney.

When I ask Mr Google about Victorian carriage lamp registered trade marks he lets me down so badly - throwing up recent TMs from the state of Victoria. I should try veteran, vintage, collectable and antique I guess. OMG!!! Did I put in 1826 TMs - surely, but I'm not sure. OK add it to the list!!

See you on my 249th birthday!!! :)

I really would love to be able to write up something of the lamps maker as I doubt that I'll find out the year of manufacture without some kind of marking. If not - never mind, it's a lovely piece and his lordship will be thrilled.

Oops....forgot to say that my first word to Mr. Google was "British", cuz it probably is. Failing memory here, but try "British carriage lamps +trademarked 1826" for starters and perhaps we can cut that down to 200th b'day, lol. Found one page written by someone about them and showed a similar few to yours. No pertinent info though....such as price or company names. Just some musing on them.

PS....click on "Home" on that page......lots of photos of antique carriage lamps and the carriages as well. Lovely!! Just saw them.

This one is similar, but it says it's from the 1960's.

Being a complete numpty I have no idea of how to "click" on these links.

I have looked at etsy, though (amongst so many others) and haven't found a match. Cross-eyed again from searching this afternoon.

    crosseyed.jpg

Oh by the way, that's not a grin, more like a grimace!

Have to go and see about dinner now and might give the whole thing a rest until tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!!!! XXX
