My great great grandfather William Brittain lived in Newburgh NY but died 30 August 1900 whilst visiting his son in Springfield MA. Springfield city records show his body was returned to Newburgh for burial. I am still trying to find a burial record in Newburgh.
Is this a possibility, on ANC Massachusetts, Death Records, 1841-1915 DEATH, BURIAL, CEMETERY & OBITUARIES View Image Record information. Name William Brittain Birth abt year location Death dd mm 1900 Springfield, Massachusetts, USA I cannot view it as I don't have a subscription
I could only find one in Nebraska and another in Indiana. Findagrave. Both died 1900 the Indiana one has name Briton and died 25th August. I also checked in the Newbugh cemeteries...nothing
Thank you Sue, I've driven myself cross-eyed browsing the Newburgh cemetery records but didn't say so in case I'd overlooked it.
This is the same record that Bonzo Dog posted. I've also found it on NEHGS and Massachusetts archives. I'll bet FamilySearch has it, too. So, I looked on GenWeb, GenWeb Archives, NEHGS (which includes NY), Findagrave, Billion Graves, and Interment.net. No luck. The last had a long list in one cemetery that is a likely place, but it was from a book published in 1898! I was hoping to find a mention in a newspaper in either NY or MA, but haven't so far. Just for laughs, I thought that since he died in August, 1900, he might be in the Census, and I might get some clues there (don't know why, but heck, why not?). Anyway, I did not find him in MA or NY. If I have any bright ideas, I'll certainly let you know.
I searched as well..the clip on ancestry is the same as you put on your post. The only way you can likely find him is an obit..some of the cemeteries are only a little bit covered on Find a Grave and I checked all of Orange county where Newburgh is. Was his wife buried there as well? Maybe we could find her...
No luck either. There is a snippet of his obit in the Springfield Republican Aug. 31, 1900. It's a pay site, but the last one in the list says.... In the city 30th, William Brittain, 67, for 6 years resident of the city, and late of Newburgh, NY. Burial services at his home, 40 Sumner Ave. today Friday at 6PM. Burial at Newburgh, NY Code: http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives He appears on the 1900 USA census as Britain, in Springfield, Mass. 40 Sumner Ave. with wife Mary, children Alice, Henry and Lillian. Each page is a separate pdf with minute text. This it the third index page of four. Sept 1, 1900 starts at file 1900-0816. I got as far as 0820, but I have to go run errands. If you have a lot of time and good eyes, then feel free to go for it. The items are so poorly organized... Olde timey newspapers.
I think the one @demeler found is a son or other relative. Looking on Ancestry there are an awful lot of William Brittains. You can find this chap on the Newburgh, New York directories in Newburgh right up to his death.
I've now scanned, skimmed and read The Newburgh Register from Aug 30-Sep 9, 1900. No sign of any notice of Wm Brittain's death or burial. Very busy time in history, though. I'll take what's left of my vision and say nighty-night!
Brilliant find Demeler, he is definitely my gg grandfather. I also have a copy of his death certificate, plus his 1900 census entry but never realised he had actually moved to Springfield with the remnants of his family (he had 13 children, 10 of whom went with him and gg grandmother Mary to the US). I think the reason he is buried in Newburgh is that his daughter Mary died there in 1890. My gg grandmother Mary died 22 September 1907 in Troy, NY (it was Granny Barb who led me to the mother lode containing this nugget).
You most certainly did me duck. The New York State Deaths Register is available for download on archive.org. The collection is not indexed and volumes can only be downloaded one year at a time. The collection covers 77 years!! The same archive is available on FMP but image quality is generally dreadful, in fact the page with Mary's death on their site is illegible apart from the heading. The information about Mary junior's death came from my cousin. She said that the 1890 Newburgh City Directory, available only on Anc had a handwritten note about the death. She never thought to download the image though, and the 1890 NY Deaths Register only has an entry for a Mary Britton who died in Watertown, which is way north of Newburgh.
Great! Glad I was of help! Do you think that if we find a burial for either Mary, then we might find William's grave? Worth a look around?
You're welcome. For some reason I can't find the 1890 Newburgh directory on Ancestry that has an image. Miss Mary is there in 1889 but not in 1891.
Found by browsing (not indexed correctly) via HeritageQuest (which is owned by Ancestry): 1890 City Directory of Newburgh, NY image 58 of 255 captured and highlighted with snippit tool.
