I have stumbled across a rather large medal and am trying to establish what it is, what it was for and when it was produced. It measures 2 and a half inches (62mm) in diameter, is 3/10 of an inch (4mm) thick and is rather heavy. These photos are not terribly good but I can upload full size if needed. On one side, it has the figure of a woman pushing a not very happy person with her feet away from herself. There is an obelisk with the double eagle on the top and also a theodolite on a stand. In the distance, two surveyors are at work. Underneath is the inscription: POSITI A GRES LIMITES – D. XIII. MAY. - MDCCLIX On the other side is a picture of a woman, who is (I presume) the woman referred to in the inscription around the edge: D. G. ELISABETA AVGVSTA. OMN. ROSS. I take this to be Elizabeth Augusta but who she was is anyone's guess. From what I have worked out so far is that there were land disputes in Prussia, part of which is today's Germany (my geography is non-existent for this part of the world...) and it marks when the disputes were resolved on 13th May 1759. I think..... If anyone could shed any further light on this, I would be grateful.
There is one on worthpoint.com for sale....eBay. Nothing that explains what it is though. Google books has something on her but it won’t translate for me. She was the wife of someone...... Ooooo...The Dashkov medals came up when I was searching but can’t find a reference to her. She is releasing women from prison apparently
I have just had another look at this - not very clear and my eyesight could be better - but it could also be MDCCLIV - 1754 I did type IV in error in my original post but have now changed it. In fact, looking through my magnifier, I am more inclined to think that is is IV - so 1754. Sorry....
by the Grace of God Elizabeth, All Russian Empress.......medal on the construction of docks in Kronstadt. On one side is the portrait of Elizabeth and an inscription of the above in Latin. DG Elisabeth Augusta OMN ROSS. This medal celebrates the construction of the dock.....Petrovsky dock 265 years. Add...not your medal but another with her mentioned.
OK, well it must be this one - but it doesn't help Code: https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/mctears/catalogue-id-2801025/lot-9694814
I would give the link but I don't think it is safe....I pulled out. Just have a google of Petrovsky dock 265 years and see what pops up.
One side certainly looks like that @AnnB Just the other side being all agricultural. Handy to know that it could have been made in the 19th century, though. Not bronze, but could be a silvered lead type metal.
Code: http://www.archives.lib.ed.ac.uk/catalogue/docs/H21.pdf Hope this is the correct one. Lots of Russian medals described. You have to scroll down a fair way.
