I'm looking for the burial of Judith Utteridge nee Brewer (possible alternate spelling Attridge) 1764 to 1773 Essex, most likely Felsted but could be of course somewhere else in Essex.

A William Utteridge married Judith Brewer 12 Nov 1761 by banns at Felsted Essex. Both OTP
Three children of William and Judith found baptised at Felsted.
    John Utteredge 4 Jun 1762.
    William Utteredge 21 Apr 1765.
    James Utteridge 21 Apr 1765.

William Utteridge, Widower, married Elizabeth Horsnel (or Horsnal) 31 Jan 1773 by Banns at Felsted, both OTP. A witness to the marriage was William Utteridge who could be her father or step brother.
One child of William and Elizabeth found baptised at Felsted.
    Elizabeth Utteridge 19 Feb 1775.
No other children found who I could be sure of.

I have tried Essex wide burial searches in the Essex PR Index on Ancestry, Family Search and Free Reg although Free Reg do not have Felsted transcribed, I even tried a search on just Judith and place Essex.
The nearest I came to finding anything sounding remotely like Utteridge was the burial of Mrs Judith Bridge 22 Apr 1766 at Felsted, I've noted that for a search on Essex Ancestors to see what the PR image names her.

Am I right in presuming that was from the Essex PR Index Molly May?

Well (she said hesitantly) ... I got this as a pressie last year ... and am still not sure how to use it ... but ...

There appear to be no UTTER*/UTTR*/ATTER*/ATTR* burials at Felsted (Holy Cross) in the 20-yr period around 1769.

The only Essex result came up as:
    ATTERIDGE/ATTRIDGE, Elisabeth - 17 Apr 1764 - Writtle, All Saints.

Mind you, I couldn't get your 1766 (Judith Bridge) to appear - so perhaps you'd better not trust my results!

The only one that I could find in the NBI was:
    Judith Attridge
    Age 73
    Birth year 1797
    Death year 1870
    Burial year 1870
    Burial date 10 Apr 1870
    Church St Nicholas
    Denomination Anglican
    Place Great Wakering
    County Essex

    Edited to add:
    There's this one:
    Judah Utteridge
    Birth year -
    Death year 1770
    Burial year 1770
    Burial date 16 ? 1770
    Church Holy Cross

    Thanks Sis.

The Judah Utteridge looks possible, the year fits with Williams second marriage in Felsted 1773. I'll have to check that out sometime in the Parish Register image on Essex Ancestors, to see if it answers questions such as "wife of" or denotes male or female.

Although Judah is a male name I can imagine a badly written first name looking something like Judah, even Judath. I'll see if there is a male Judah birth/baptism somewhere, if so I'll follow him/her through if possible.

Although I would consider the surname Attridge, that spelling seems to be more common around the Great Wakering and the Writtle/Roxwell areas, I have another Atteridge/Atteridge line from the Writtle/Roxwell areas.

Just had a search for Judah Utteridge.

The burial is on The Essex PR Index as 16 Apr 1770 Felsted but the entry doesn't state whether male or female.

The burial was not found on Family Search and Free Reg doesn't cover Felsted.

Carried out an Essex wide search for the birth/baptism of Judah Utteridge, Essex wide, 1690 to 1770 on all of the three above sites, nothing, even tried the same search for a Judith Utteridge, just in case, nothing.

I'll hold fire on Judith until I can get that burial checked on Essex Ancestors.

Thanks for that patten-walsh, well it's plainly Judah and not a misinterpreted Judath or Judeth so that's that, yet another theory down the gurgler.

I'm pretty sure that William Utteridge, widower, the husband of Elizabeth Horsnal/Horsnel/Horsnail  was married first to Judith Brewer, however, until I find a burial for Judith I can't be 100% sure so I'll leave it for now until a check in Felsted burial PRs on Essex Ancestors is carried out.

All though Judah is no use to me I might have another crack at finding his birth or baptism.

I've been through the Felsted parish register burials from 1764 up to 1810 and there are no Utteridge burials in that period so I can only assume that although the marriages took place at Felsted then they went elsewhere although for both marriages it did say they were all OTP

Thanks for that info, this particular branch have been a right royal pain.

I had begun to think that a lot of Felsted entries baptisms and burial were missed by The Essex PR Index (EPRI) but now I think it's down to misinterpretation by the method used to copy the PRs.

At times, to double check info I have already from PRs, I've had to put in the date I have, plus and minus 5 years, and just a first name to bring the entry up on the EPRI, there have been a few that I just can't bring up even with stretching my imagination to it's fullest.

I have now come across this person and her husband William plus children, I'm not sure if they are related to the Attridges in the north of Chelmsford, Essex, there were some at East Hanningfield which is south of Chelmsford.

Of course I mustn't overlook the possibility that Judith Utteridge's burial wasn't recorded in the first place.

The following entry is indicative of what to expect on the EPRI.

From the Essex PRs I had a William Atteridge baptised 28 Mar 1736 at Good Easter, Essex, the son of William & Mary, I also found that baptism on Free Reg.

Under marriages on the EPRI I found William Atteridge married 29 Mar 1736 at Good Easter, father William, mother Mary, no spouse name, obviously I think a baptism not a marriage. This William Atteridge is one of two Williams who I think are possibly the husband of Elizabeth Horsna(i)l and therefore the father of Elizabeth Utteridge.

The other is William Attridge baptised 1 Apr 1739 at Roxwell, Essex, parents John Attridge and Mary Reynolds. In a way I would like this family to be my ancestors because they would tie in with another Roxwell/Writtle Atteridge line I have.

If I was to choose by way of distance from their places of baptism to Felsted it would be the Good Easter 1736 William.

Roxwell is 12. 9 miles (20.8 Ks) from Felsted, Good Easter is 8.6 miles (13.8 Ks) from Felsted.

I have enough children from William Utteridge's two marriages (I think) and enough children from the Roxwell John Attridge and Mary Reynolds family to perhaps decide which is the William. The stumbling block is the Good Easter family of William and Mary, so far I have only been able to come up with one child William 1736. :nailbiting: :D

The 1736 baptism of William Atteridge at Good Easter is correct. There is also a Mary Atteridge bap 9 Oct 1730 Good Easter, daughter of William & Mary.
A marriage at Good Easter : "William Atteridge of ye parish of Good Easter singleman and Mary Knight of ye same, singlewoman were married together by banns the 8th day of October 1727"

    Thanks again for the info

I'm trying to see if I can link the earlier Good Easter families of William Attridge and Mary Knight or the Roxwell John Attridge and Mary Reynolds with the later Good Easter family of William Utteridge and Judith Brewer/Elizabeth Horsna(i)l

The Felsted and Roxwell families both used the names William, John and James but as the two fathers are William and John that only leaves James as a possible link. Although William and Judith Utteridge nee Brewer of Felsted did name their firstborn son John and bearing in mind the naming pattern Jan mentioned on G S whereby the first named son is named after his paternal grandfather, perhaps William Atteridge baptised 1 Apr 1739 at Roxwell the son of John Attridge and Mary Reynolds is the William Utteridge who married Judith Brewer 1761 and Elizabeth Horsna(i)l 1773 both at Felsted.

The evidence is pretty weak I admit ,clutching at straws springs to mind, so for now it will have to remain just a theory.

    On Free Reg.
Only one Roxwell Att(e)ridge marriage 1752 to 1839, Jane Attridge married Joseph Cliff 23 Oct 1764 both OTP.

None at Writtle 1770 to 1819.

So did the Attridges abandon the Roxwell and Writtle areas.

Roxwell marriages on Free Reg cover 1530 to 1839.
Writtle Marriages on Free Reg cover 1770 to 1819.

If anyone cares to comment on the above please feel free to do so, no matter how destructive. :D
