While I wait for wills to arrive on other mysteries, I wonder if any clever person can rootle out something I can't on this one

Joseph Barnes or Barns was born 1772 according to his gravestone, and died in Avebury
    in 1853

I have never found his birth in Avebury, but circumstantial evidence leads me to suspect that he may have been the son of Thomas Barnes and Elizabeth Lewis who married 3 Nov 1769 in Aldbourne about 14 miles away, who apparently died 1801. The only son that I can find of theirs is Thomas baptised in 1776 in Aldbourne, who trees say was the one who married Hannah Yeomans and died 1826

There is a lovely window there for Joseph or other children, but I can't find any. I also haven't found any wills. Can anyone find anything?

According to the new GRO death index he was 84 when he died - assuming he was the Joseph Barns registered in the Marlborough district in the June Quarter of 1853?

Could he perhaps have been born before his parents married, and subtracted a couple of years from his age later, so that wasn't so apparent?

I can't see a suitable Joseph Lewis baptism, however, but only looked quickly.

Do you have him in the 1851 census, btw, as I wasn't sure if I'd found him there or not?

Do you know, I've never looked at the GRO because I had the monumental inscription! That one does seem to be the only one suitable. But surely the same people registered the death and buried him, how odd the age would change

I can't see any suitable Joseph Lewis either

Joseph is in Avebury with his son Isaac age 35 in 1851, transcribed as age 21 on Ancestry HO107; Piece: 1838; Folio: 14; Page: 20

There is a birth on 28/5/1769 of a Joseph Barns to Joseph and Mary Barns (always smile while I find that combination) at Broad Hinton. My knowledge of English geography is left to a google search and Broad Hinton is 4 miles from Avebury.

In 1841 a Joseph Barns is age 70 married to Sarah 60 living at Avebury his birth is 1767/1771. 15 HO107 1185/11

Looking at the original for the 1851 census, the age looks as though it has been overwritten as 60. However, on closer inspection, the original could well have been 80, which would fit in with the age of 70 in 1841 and the birth of 1769.

Just looked at this and the transcription on both FMP and Family Search say that the mother is Martha ;)

Following on from this, there is a marriage between a Joseph BARNES and a Martha CHIVERS/CHEVERS that took place on 23rd August 1759 at Winterbourne Bassett, which is just 3 miles from Broad Hinton. :)

    Edited to add:
The Banns show that Martha was from Winterbourne Bassett whilst Joseph was from Broad Hinton. ;)

Yes, I thought that too but I wasn't sure last night whether this was the Joseph in question or if he was elsewhere in 1851 ... didn't want to make too many assumptions without knowing what other information annabel had. As she has confirmed that this is 'her' Joseph in 1851 I am pretty sure that the age was originally written as 81 but has been altered.

The burial record is on Ancestry and also gives his age as 84 (in June 1853).

Gravestones are often installed a lot later ... in fact a couple of gravestones for members of my own family who died decades ago were just replaced last year and by a family member who certainly didn't register the deaths or organise the burials, as he was a small child at the time.

Thank you everyone, it's amazing how just 3 years difference in the birth date lead me down the garden path. I went away and had a look with this info and also came to conclusion that Martha Chivers and Joseph Barnes were likely the parents of Joseph 1769

@Sue036 how did you find that burial record on Ancestry, I can't find it at all?

At the risk of annoying everyone, I think that Thomas Barnes of post 1 who married Hannah Yeomans must himself be the descendant of a brother of one these people, as my g aunt has loads of their descendants as DNA cousins, and it's getting to the edge of how many generations you can go back

Thomas (who married Hannah)'s father Thomas appears to have been baptised 1740 in Aldbourne and married Elizabeth Lewis, his parents John and Elizabeth

Joseph 1769's father Joseph appears to have been baptised 1731 in Winterbourne Bassett and married Martha Chivers, his parents Thomas and Elizabeth

Have I missed something again? I'm puzzled by the two different areas

I searched for Wiltshire as a keyword in the 'card catalogue' and found
Wiltshire, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-1916

Then I searched that collection for Joseph Barnes with a date of death in 1853 and it was the first result.
