    Having found the image of the marriage between Thomas Batchelor and Mary Sayer, Thomas made his mark so whether or not this Thomas would learn to write his name by the time he witnessed James' wedding to his daughter is anyone's guess. :( here is the marriage entry anyway. Where did I leave that drawing board? I did lots of work on Mary Sayer without even thinking of looking at the signatures. Bummocks.

    Thrice times bummocks. I've just revisited @Sandiep's post #21 marriage of Thomas Batchelor to Mary Quelch 1787. The actual image for the marriage is unreadable, heart sank, but lo! there is a Marriage Bond; heart lifted. Then heart sank without trace as that Thomas Batchelor also made his mark and didn't sign.

    Yes, this was my thought also. Perhaps he had managed to write his
    name in the meantime.
    I am of the opinion that the majority of the '41 Census for Wimbledon
    is not there. Wandsworth is covered. Merton is covered. A small part
    of Wimbledon against Kingston seems to be covered (I imagine this
    to be that abutting Coombe Hill and modern day Robin Hood Roundabout
    area).Could someone with more knowledge than I check this out?

    1851 Census - Wandsworth, Wimbledon
    James Warren lodger mar 59 lab born Rushden Herts

    Rushden
    1793 Jan 3 WARREN James s James & Elizabeth

    At next door Sandon

    1814 Sep 26 James Warren & Mary Mason

    I cannot see any children to this couple there as yet.

    The following are the missing Surrey sections from 1841:

    Piece 74 Surrey: Walton-upon-Thames, Hersham, Weybridge
    Piece 1075 Surrey: Malden

    Wimbledon fell under Piece 1075 (it was counted under Kingston) so could well be missing although the parish has not been recorded as such.

    The one who is a lodger is a labourer, but mine was always either carpenter or a plate printer. The son Edmund was a calico printer and lived in Nelsons Field along with father in law, also copper plate printer. I cant find the one living with Mary Mason.

    Besides James in 1793, James and Elizabeth have son Edward.
    The labourer is the Census, the others are the Parish Registers.
    There is no more proof that the marriage took place at Reigate
    than at Sandon.

    I've been rummaging around and have found a fair chunk of Wimbledon in 1841 at HO107/1069/5 and HO107/1069/6. Whether this is all of it or not, I have no idea. My grandparents lived in Wimbledon, so I can only think of it as the rather large place I remember, but I've discovered that in 1841 the population was only 2,630. The population in 1961 before it was absorbed into the Borough of Merton was 57,312.......

    I have just checked Edmund's marriage cert and it shows his father James was a plate printer, but doesn't say deceased.

    I was born at Southfields, just north of Wimbledon Tennis Courts.
    On the other corner was a grocers owned by a nice old man called Ellis.
    He could remember when they used to walk cows up the road to be
    milked!

    I have found the image of the marriage James Warren and Mary Mason. If they are right, I don't know how they would have gone from Hertfordshire to Wimbledon.

    Well, Shanks pony I suppose, exactly as they would have from Reigate!:)
    I wonder whether I will be 'unfriended' for this!:(
    It does look as though there is an Edward on Mary Mason's side as well.
    After all the first child at Wimbledon was Edward, there is no trace of an
    Edward on the Surrey line!

    Dont be daft. The dates work slightly better Edward baptised 26 June 1814, they married 26 September the same year. In the meantime I'm trying to find a James and Mary in Hertfordshire in any census.

    Just a note to say the parents James and Elizabeth (Brown)
    married at Ashwell 1775, he of Rushden, had children at various places
    in the near vicinity.

    Sarah married a JOSHUA Bennett!
