I am looking for my 3 x Great Grandfather's baptism. I have him in all the census from 1841 through to 1881, he died in 1886. From the census he was born in either Shotts or New Monkland, Lanarkshire, more census said the latter. His age varies, so he was supposedly born somewhere from 1812 to 1816 or thereabouts. From his death certificate, (known not to always be reliable), his parents are:

John BAILLIE who married Margaret MEEK 1806 in Whitburn, West Lothian, Scotland.
They had the following children that I found on familysearch.

Jean was baptised on 7 May 1810 in Whitburn,West Lothian.
David was baptised on 21 June 1812 in Shotts, Lanarkshire.
Penwall L. was baptised on 6 July 1817 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire.
Christian was baptised on 15 June 1820 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire.
John was baptised on 15 June 1823 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire.
Mary was baptised on 11 June 1826 in Slamannan, Stirlingshire.
William - was baptised on 13 September 1829 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.
Thomas Smart - was baptised on 12 December 1831 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire.
Janet was baptised on 22 March 1835 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire.

FMP have the baptism of a George BAILIE on 17 November 1811 at New Monkland, father John mother Agnes MARTIN - any good? Marriage at New Monkland in April 1806 for John & Agnes. Children Agnes baptised 1807, John baptised 1809 & George 1811, all at New Monkland. I cannot find a George baptised to John & Margaret in the relevant timespan in Lanarkshire.

However, if your George is the one who married Mary BELL at New Monkland in 1833 and is an Ironstone Miner in various census records, then the names of his children would certainly suggest that his likely parents were John BAILLIE & Margaret MEEK. Have you got George's marriage record and if so does that help in determining his likely parents?

Went looking at SP's pdf list of OPR coverage for possible gaps:

    651. NEW MONKLAND (for Airdrie)
    651/1 B 1693-1744 M 1703-52 D -
    651/2 B 1745-1819 M - D -
    651/3 B - M 1752-85 D 1748-85

No notes on problems with continuity or condition.

    655. SHOTTS
    655/1 B 1707-1803 M - D -
    655/2 B 1804-19 M - D -
    655/3 B - M 1705-1819 D 1709-1819

    Likewise, no problems noted.
Any chance a third parish could be in the mix?

All I have is banns, which just gives only the couple's names. The only place I have his parent's names is in his death certificate. Thank you very much for trying Janet.

I've done a search of all parishes. The only thing I can think is that he has been missed in transcribing. Thank you for trying Barb.

This is the second early Scottish marriage where I can only find banns. Though I'm given to understand sometimes that's all you'll find. So, how do you know that the actual marriage took place. They did seem to pay the church rather a lot for calling the banns, so who knows.
