It has been a while and I've allowed my subs. to Anc. and FMP to lapse. From research I did a long time back, I think I have discovered my 5X Gt-grandfather - John Rowledge/Rowlidge. The source for this a baptism for a John Rowledge baptised 15 Jan. 1726 in Flore, Northants.

This son, John, would appear to have married Frances Wright in Churchover, Warwicks. [after Banns]. Churchover is approx 20 miles from Flore. They had five children - all baptisms found in either Churchover or Church Lawford along with likely burials.

More on their children in other forums as needed. What I am trying to determine is the maiden name of John's mother and details of their marriage. All the baptism tells me was that the parents were John and Mary.

Any information on this couple along with other children would be appreciated.

It is quite possible that I will have wait until after Christmas when I am presented with subscriptions to Ancestry and/or FMP.

In the meantime I'll just patiently wait and see if I get any responses.:sceptical:

I looked on FMP but their Northants records are pretty scant - they do have the baptism original.

If you are looking for a new sub - do check online for half price deals.

    Nixon...:headbang:
    Just kidding.
The only one I could find on my only source is a John Roulledge and Mary Sowerby way over in Brampton Cumberland on 14/4/1714. Bit too far away I gather.

I agree - too far away.

Nixon is/was a definite :headbang: however I think they are resolved.
I do though have a question about Mary Rowledge my 5X great aunt bapt. 31 Oct 1762 who married William Nixon 4 Jul 1785 and was buried 17 Dec 1818. According to Warwickshire Burials 1813-1910 Mary was 55 years old and was living in Rugby. Her 2 sons Samuel and Thomas age 21 and 17 were convicted of Highway Robbery and sentenced to death on 28 Mar 1818. Both had their sentences commuted Transportation for Life. Samuel left on the SHIPLEY c.Jul 1818 and Thomas c.Dec.1818 on the BARING.
My question is --- how can I find the cause of death for Mary? It was such a traumatic period in her life and I wonder if these events contributed to her death?

I cannot find a marriage on the Northamptonshire Marriage Index for a John ROWLEDGE (or variants) to a Mary. However, John may well have had a brother Francis ROWLEDGE as there is a Francis ROWLEDGE married to a Jane who is having children at Flore at around the same time. This could tie in with the baptisms at Flore (via Northamptonshire Baptismal Index pre 1700) for a Francis son of Francis & Annie ROWLEDGE at Flore on 19 June 1692 and that of a John son of Francis & Annie ROWLEDGE at Flore on 27 January 1695

Burial at Flore on 20 August 1722 of John son of John ROWLEDGE, Labourer, & Mary his wife, an infant
Burial at Flore on 3 March 1766 for John ROWLIDGE

No burial that I can find at Flore for Mary, but there is a burial at West Haddon on 13 August 1800 for a Mary ROWLIDGE, widow, which could be a possibility.

None of which, unfortunately, gives us a maiden name for Mary wife of John ROWLEDGE!!

I think this John ROWLIDGE must be connected to your line somehow, Colin.

PCC Will of John ROWLIDGE of St Mary Aldermanbury, London, Salter dated 14 February 1737/8 and proved at London on 26 January 1739/40, in which he mentions:

Friends Henry SOUTER & Anthony MATTHEWS
Friend Henry BARTON at the Redhouse, Deptford
Sister Ruth ROWLIDGE to whom he leaves his half yard land in the parish of Flower in the county of Northampton plus the sum of Seventy pounds
    Wife Anne ROWLIDGE
He appoints his wife Anne & sister Ruth as Executors

Looking at the parish register transcripts of Flore, it looks as if this John could be the son of a Samuel & Elizabeth ROWLEDG baptised 15 May 1678. Siblings are Samuel baptised 11 December 1679 (ROWLEDGE), Ruth baptised 15 April 1686 (ROWLEDGE)

Burial at Flore on 29 May 1719 for Samuel ROWLEDGE junior
Another at Flore on 29 June 1718 for Elizabeth wife of Samuel ROWLEDGE
And one at Flore on 13 October 1722 for Samuel ROWLEDGE, Yeoman.

I wonder if this Samuel ROWLEDGE could be a brother of the Francis ROWLEDGE married to Annie SHERMAN at Flore on 18 December 1688 and therefore uncle to your John ROWLEDGE who married Mary Unknown??

Again, none of which helps to find the origin of Mary but perhaps a bit more background information which could prove useful eventually.

An early Christmas gift was a sub. to FMP butam having to waitabit for Anc. sub. You mentioned that she was a WIDOW but FMP has a transcript only that doesn't indicate her marital status.

John and Mary had a daughter Mary baptised 16 Feb. 1723 in Flore. which apart from the marital status I like given that she would be about 77 when she died. The wife of John [marriage not yet found] was possibly aged any where from 18 to 20 when she had her 1st child - John bapt. 5 Aug. 1722 and buried 20 Aug. 1722. If Mary was 18 when she married John, then assuming their 1st child was born arround the time of their marriage, then she would be close to 100 years old in 1800 which I feel is somewhat unlikely. Flore is approx. 10 miles from West Haddon.

I have looked for marriages of John and Mary's children in the past on Anc. and found the following:
John married Frances Wright 11 Dec. 1758 in Churchover, Warwickshire - but have been unable to find marriage for Mary, Samuel or Ruth.

As for burials in West Haddon, I have found Samuel 14 Jul. 1773, Ruth 13 Jun. 1745 and 18 Sep. 1747 in Flore but all are transcripts only.

    Hi Colin,

Ancestry have Northamptonshire parish register images and I also have a lot of Northants parish register transcript cds bought before the registers came online. The burial for Mary ROWLIDGE is from the parish register of West Haddon (Ancestry have mistakenly transcribed the year as 1801).

Looking through the parish register images of Flore gives the following records for children of John & Mary, which you already have:

Baptised 5 August 1722 John ROWLEDGE buried 20 August 1722
Baptised 16 February 1723/24 Mary ROWLEDGE
Baptised 15 January 1726/27 John ROWLEDGE
Baptised 20 November 1730 Samuel ROWLEDGE
Baptised 15 September 1734 Ruth ROWLEDGE

Unfortunately, a few of the parish register entries are not so informative from 1745 onwards, so the two burials for Ruth ROWLEDGE give no other information and Francis & Jane ROWLEDGE also had a daughter Ruth baptised on 8 April 1726, so which Ruth burial is which, I cannot determine:

Buried 13 June 1745 Ruth ROWLEDGE
Buried 18 September 1747 Ruth ROWLEDGE

There is a Banns record at Flore dated 24th January/1st and 8th February 1761 for a Samuel ROWLEDGE & Hannah SHAW of the parish of Handslip - could this be the Samuel who is the son of John & Mary?

I wonder if this could perhaps be the burial of John's wife Mary? Buried at Flore on 6 April 1763 Goody ROWLIDGE. Presumably this means Goodwife ROWLIDGE. The timescale would seem more reasonable than the burial at West Haddon in 1800. John's burial gives no other details except the date of 3 March 1766.

Sorry not to be of more help, Colin. Have a happy Christmas and New Year.

Thanks Janet, the same to you and your family.

This is more information and whilst it doesn't help with the marriage of John and Mary, does give me more "food for thought"

Actually it gave me severe heartburn - only just now recovered:D

Will now look up the various links on Anc. & FMP and see if any light bulb moments occur.:sceptical:
