Took me a while to understand ‘Pommy’. Now I’m rather good at it.
‘Hants’ Is the one that amuses me.

Old English names for them I know but I always smile and wonder why not just use the modern name and stop confusing us on the other side of the world.

The first 10 years of my working life, in England, was as a GPO telephonist. I recognize most towns, but for the life of me quite often I can't tell you which county they were/are in.

I'm still having trouble as the counties keep shifting about.
While merging my Mother's Phillips file into her Martin lot, so many London/ Middlesex. having to change both files to blend with each other or at least lead to the same output. My Legacy 'Locations list' is getting so long. Seems I'll have to go through it again. :(
Then again there are the ones which start with England. :( My fault as I messed with the naming of locations.

then there are the Southwark/ Surrey /London

Southwark was, and always will be as far as I am concerned, in Surrey. ;)

For me it will always be "Sarf of the River", even though I used to work at St Christopher House.

I'm beginning to place all of my Bermondsey-Horsleydown & other surroundings which are now named as Southwark -not London- as being in Surrey. Some as Kent/ Surrey [Bromley] & some still share London due to early records.

Just found this site (I think it's set up to buy a 'South London Club Card') but you can dismiss the sign up. it gives the meaning behind the names of the London borough of Southwark. There are further links within the page that give the meaning behind the names in other places in London.

I'm in a similar position regarding towns like East & West Ham. Ilford, Barking, Romford, Dagenham, Hornchurch, Canning town, Silvertown etc etc, but as far as I'm concerned they might be administered by London County Council but they are still Essex. :D

Come the day we'll take back the Sudartern Lands.

please don't subscribe @Ma-dotcom just scroll down the page. The fading is only on the first paragraph. Which is not important.

For anyone else having trouble reading the greyed out writing, I've just found a way to read it all. Go to the bottom of the page and click your mouse, then drag the mouse back up the page (as if you're highliting/selecting text to copy and paste) this highlights all the text and takes away the grey.

And don't forget Leyton, Leytonstone, Walthamstow and Chingford. I still smart about the South West Essex Technical School having to be renamed due to the Greater London Council "stealing" bits of Essex.

Places I knew well - my Dad was born in East Ham (his parents having moved from Devon), lived in Canning Town. I was born in Plaistow, lived in Ilford, then Chadwell Heath (Romford) before moving back to my 'roots'. Bob was born in Chingford. So, we had friends and relatives in all those areas - which I still mostly think of as Essex :)

West Ham is big in my files, Plaistow just appearing- been there along time but new to my refurbished family file, Ilford, Romford, little bitty Canning Town, Chelmsford, a few lesser known paces & the good old Southend on Sea, where evidently it was a good place to retire etc.

    At least Essex still exists.

It's sad that the historic counties were messed around with. When checking old records you have to be sure what the boundaries were at the time. A good part of historic Berkshire is now in Oxfordshire for example, and I won't even mention the monstrosities of Avon and Cleveland.
A pet annoyance of mine is the ignorance of many online sites as to the status of Bristol, my home town, which since 1377 has been a county in its own right and not part of Glucestershire or Somerset.
