Thomas COTTELL wed Elizabeth DOUGLASS on 30th May 1791 at St James' Piccadilly.

I have found them as parents at a baptism of their daughter Elizabeth in August the following year at the same Church. Apart from that, nothing. Nada. Zippo. Zilch.

I would be grateful for any further information about this couple.

    Thank you. :)

Just had a quick look at the papers for clues and found in the London Evening Standard of the 24th June 1878
June 15 at Park Street, Bath, aged 70, Charlotte Douglass, daughter of the late Thomas Cottell Esq., of Crewkerne, Somerset.
and in the London Evening Standard of the 7th March 1879
March 1 at 41 Park Street, Bath, aged 78, Ann, last survivor of the children of the late Thomas Cottell Esq., formerly of Crewkerne, Somerset.
    Will keep looking :)

Annoying when only the father is noted, one would think there was only ever one person of that name. Much easier to find if Mum gets a mention also.;)

I am not sure of the Somerset connection. I have no other clues to link to that neck of the woods.

The daughter Elizabeth that I mentioned earlier ended up in Rutland and married a chap by the name of STUBBS, so not this one. :(

Okay, there could well be a Somerset connection as the name of DOUGLAS is now mentioned.

    Thank you @AnnB and @Chimp :)

In the death notice, it doesn’t make mention of Elizabeth’s surname when she died, so she may well have been a Stubbs - and the age is right :)
Also, in the death notice for Charlotte (post 2) she is named as Charlotte Douglass, so the same spelling of Douglass as her mother :)

Elizabeth (or Betsy as she was also known) died in 1867 and was buried in Rutland. :(

There is a son of Thomas and Elizabeth COTTELL who was baptised at St Margaret's Westminster on 13th July 1794 - Thomas George. This was about a mile away from St James'.

I have a feeling that I have just found this chap in Bath in 1851 as it says that he was born in Westminster: piece 1940, folio 448, page 29

I am now totally confused... o_O

There is a mention (very brief) in the papers in 1825 of the marriage. There is also one for the same year for a Jas Cottell son of Thomas Cottell of Cornwall house Walcot

It says that Jas Cottell was the 2nd son on Mr Thomas Cottell, this would be correct if Thomas was born 1794 and James 1797

That's it. Totally confused so I am going back a generation with what I know for sure.

Elizabeth (aka Betsey) COTTELL (also CUTTELL/CATTELL - take your pick ) wed Henry STUBBS on 30th May 1820 in Cottesmore, Rutland.

The 1841 census shows that she was not born in the county of Rutland - piece 894, book 4, folio 4, page 5

In 1851 she is staying with her son Richard Henry, who is a Constable in the Met Police, and his wife Mary Ann - piece 1523, folio 76, page 28

Elizabeth's place of birth is given as St Pancras and she is aged 60, indicating a birth year of about 1791.

Having found the baptism of an Elizabeth COTTELL at St James, Piccadilly, just a mile down the road, in 1792, I connected the two. I didn't think that COTTELL was that common a name... :headbang:

However, as everything is pointing to this being a completely different Elizabeth, I am now on the search for a more likely candidate. :sceptical:
