Looking for James and his family in 1841 census.

including his wife is Isabella (nee Hall) - they were both born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland in 1805, according to the 1851 census.

Hopefully, with them will be daughter Mary born 1832ish in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and son William born 1834 Bermondsey, Southwark (so I would expect them to be somewhere in Surrey).

James was a Leather Dresser on the 1851 census. He and Isabella married on 19 October 1828 in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

    Can anyone see them?

That's the lot that I found. If you look at the original, the name does look like LAIDLAW.

Thank you Daft Bat and MollyMay - it must be them :)

Have found possible deaths for children Ann (1844) and Isabella (1842). Looking for Frances (Francis on FMP, but age in the female column).

Also, I wonder if Margaret aged 10 is Mary in later census? Is it Margaret or Mary something or Margery?

Silly me - Frances is Fanny in 1851

I wonder if the enumerator orinigally wrote Mary, but read it back as Marg = Margaret

They have it as LAIDLON

A bit slow typing there, I knew I had found it before, but hadn't made a note of it. Well done WelchRegLost :)

I think Isabella, the mother died in 1856, but can anyone find a death for James, the father? Your guess is as good as mine as to what it might be under.

I think it must have been before 1861, as James, born 1845/6 is with his married sister Mary GRAMSON and her husband Daniel in 1861 (RG09/326/67/40).

Daniel GRAMSON or rather his father is another one I shall be asking for help with later.

I saw the death of an Isabella LAIDLOW in 1856 in Bermondsey. Following this lead (Bermondsey) I found a death for a James LAIDLOW in September quarter 1861. Looking at the GRO, it gives his age as 59, which fits with a birth year of about 1802.

Thanks Jan, so he should be on the 1861 census somewhere. I vaguely remember seeing a death in the workhouse, but wasn't sure. Will have to look again.

Then he could have been enumerated just by initials if he was in the workhouse. :(

He died on 23 September and was taken out on 24th "by his friends", so no burial date or place shown. Will keep looking.
