In trying to track the family down in the papers, I came across this - which you may already know about? Mid Sussex Times 12th January 1904 At the Police Court on Thursday Eustace Pickett (36) was charged with attempting to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a knife in a urinal in Black Lion Street on the 31st ult. P.S. Harry Wheatly said that he was called to the lavatory. Hearing groans he forced the door of one of the compartments, and found prisoner inside lying on the floor with two wounds in his throat. There was a pool of blood on the floor, and the pocket knife produced was lying by his side. The letter produced was behind the waterpipe. Witness sent for Dr Maguire, who bandaged prisoner’s throat, and ordered his removal to the Sussex County Hospital. He was discharged from that institution that morning, and when charged he replied “Yes.” Dr Chadborn said he thought, from his appearance, prisoner was subject to fits of melancholia. Mrs Pickett, prisoner’s wife, promised to look after him if he was discharged. The Bench, on prisoner promising there should no repetition of the offence, allowed him to go.
On wow! I didn't know about that at all! He died in 1909 so maybe he was successful.... Edited to add... His father William killed himself that way when Eustace was aged 2. That's a whole other story...
How sad, like father, like son.......no wonder he grew up with ‘melancholia’ I’ll see if I can find any mention of Eustace’s death. What was his father’s name, or have you already got any newspaper reports?
I have the full details of Eustace's father William's suicide, but thanks. He left his widow with 6 children under the age of 10.
My great-grandfather hung himself, leaving my great-grandmother with 5 children and 7 months pregnant with my grandfather I haven’t had any luck with Eustace’s death yet, but I’ll keep looking.

Here I am generalising again- but it IS quite relevant. In my tree of about 100 000 people I have encountered many individuals registered as Frank or Kate who became Francis and Catherine in later life and also acquiring non-registered 2nd and 3rd christian names. They all frustrated me for months but eventually turned out to be the same individuals registered as Frank and Kate. I suspect it every time there is a registration of a "shortened" name or nickname. These days I shudder at boys registered Jamie when I try Judge or Lord as titles in their future life! LOL. To me they just ain't proper!
