Ann was born I think at St James Piccadilly In the 1841 census in St Pancras HO107; Piece: 685; Book: 1 she is under her married name Ann Turner b 1781 with her sister Lucy Davies and grandaughter Ellen Skinner (on Ancestry you have to see the original to see all the people) I have more about who I think are her siblings than I do about her. She is my direct ancestor and I need to find her baptism to prove I have the right family Her father is I think Robert Davies and her mother Lucy nee Woodward I also can't find her death, her husband was Joseph Turner b 1772 who either died 1811 or was in an asylum in 1848 I know these names are not easy, but can anyone find her birth?
A few Ann's that could be her, baptised St. James, Piccadilly - either DAVIS or DAVIES with a father Robert - but none with a mother Lucy.
Can you give us a bit more information about Ann, e.g date of her marriage to Joseph TURNER & the details which may be of help in tracing Ann. In the 1841 census she is described as Independent, so did husband Joseph leave a Will? Who is the Charlotte DAVIES aged 30, is she the daughter of Lucy DAVIES and if so was DAVIES actually Lucy's married name. Janet
Ann Davis married Joseph Turner 18 Feb 1800 at St Mary Lambeth. He may have been the one who died 3 August 1811 at St James Piccadilly He may have been the one admitted to the asylum at St George Hanover square in 1848. Both give a birth of 1772. It's all guesses though As far as I can tell Charlotte Davies is actually Charlotte Dawes and is no relation Thanks for looking
I tried all the variations of Davis I could think of on FreeReg. but nothing came up even close to London. Maybe she's on some lost or un-transcribed register like my Obedience Hadley and her sibs.
Did you see the will of Robert Davies Baker of Haymarket probate 19/5/1790? on Anc. Annoyingly he leaves everything to his wife Lucy for the education and maintenance of his children and he doesn't name them
Wow, how did you find that? It took me ages to find it even when you had told me. That has to be him. He mentions Thos Turner (not sure which person he is, but possibly a relative of Ann's future husband) and witnessed by James Woodward who could be his wife Lucy's brother. And St James is exactly the right area Thank you for that. It helps me feel slightly more positive about Ann's parentage
As both Ann and Lucy were 'ind' in 1841, Ithought they might have inherited from their father. So I just looked on Anc Wills and Probate and there it was. I also saw his marriage to Lucy Woodward was by Licence (not sure if you could find that) 28/7/1776 at St Mary Westminster. There are 3 Ann Davis with father Robert bap. but none with mother Lucy.
Too late to edit my previous post, but those 3 Ann Davis bapts were London wide - transcriptions only. FMP has St James originals I have found these children bap to Robert and Lucy at St James Piccadilly all with the surname Davis Robert 1778 James 1780 Lydia Woodward 1781 Samuel Woodward 1783 Lucy Hannah 1784 There is a bap of an Ann Davis 1777 d/o Robert and Elizabeth (I have checked the original and it does say Elizabeth),
Thank you, yes I have those children. Lydia Woodward Davis married under that name in 1815 to Luis Morand. I don't know if they were twins or one of them was born 1782. I wondered if Roberts wife Lucy had a will as a woman of means, but of course I can't find one
FMP has an entry (Wills and Probate set) for Lucy Davies d1821 of1 Vernons Buildings Pancras - it gives the National Archives reference. If you can navigate the NA it might be your lady
Well I'm none the wiser. It's a reference to an entry in an old index, which says the executor was James Edmonds, a name I don't know. I can't see a death to see if there are any clues to her identity there either
I found it on the NA (that is a first for me) and downloaded it. I am sure it is not you Lucy though, she is from Summerstown and inherited from her sister Catherine Billamore, and everything is left to people without the surname Davies suggesting she was a single lady. What a shame she isn't yours.
I cannot seem to find anything on Lucy Davies after the mention in her husband's will. But I did find a marriage of Lucy Davies widow to John Moloney at St John the Evangelist Westminster in 1814
You might find the PCC Will of John WOODWARD, Baker, of The Haymarket in the parish of St James, dated 11 December 1782 and proved at London on 16 December 1782, interesting (image available to view on Ancestry). The probate part of the Will mentions Thomas TURNER, Robert DAVIS & Lucy DAVIS (wife of Robert DAVIS), his widow & relict Hannah WOODWARD & Lydia WOODWARD, mother of the deceased. The main body of the Will mentions his wife Hannah WOODWARD, his son James WOODWARD, an infant, and his natural daughter Lydia Woodward GREENILL. Gives a bit more background information. Janet
Another PCC Will, this time for Lydia WOODWARD of The Haymarket, widow, dated 5 June 1779 and proved at London on 17 December 1788. The main body of her Will leaves everything to her son John WOODWARD but of course he had died c1782 so the probate part of the Will is interesting in that it was granted to James WOODWARD, Dorothy wife of Thomas TURNER & Lucy DAVIS wife of Robert DAVIS, three of the natural & lawful children of the said deceased. Janet
Thank you, they are amazing finds. I'm going through them to see if I can glean anything. But I'm a little concerned that there is no sign of an Ann Davies. Perhaps she wasn't Lucy's sister in 1841 but something else
Or husband Joseph Turner's cousin. There are several Joseph Turner and Ann marriages in the area so she might not have been a Davies
