@Brentor boy I have been accepted on the Facebook South African page. So I just asked what you did in your original post here. Fingers crossed.
@Brentor boy Here's the answers that I've had so far. I'll stay connected to the page in the hope that we can get further suggestions. "Most Cornish miners started out at the Copper mines in Namaqualand o’Okiep and Spektakel mines. Depending on year. He might have become a prospector for diamond or gone to the Witwatersrand for the gold." "Have you tried the online Cornwall database? There may be emigration records or an obituary giving details. Try siblings and parents too as I found my Cornish miner via a family notice which said where he was living. The other possibility is that he inherited." Code: https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/home/ "Also the Cornwall newspaper. A lot of miners in SA still had notices posted. That’s how I found who my SA ggg mother was married to and that she had twins."
I think this is your William. From the Cornubian and Redruth Times 12 December 1903. The death took place on Saturday last, December 5th, of William White, of Trevellas, St. Agnes, from miner's phthisis. Deceased who is only 39 years of age, leaves a widow and 2 children. The funeral takes place to-day (Thursday). Great sympathy is felt for the family in their sad bereavement.
West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser 22 October 1903. TO LET, a four-roomed HOUSE and 20 acres of GROUND, with Outbuildings at Christmas - Apply William White, Trevellas Downs, St, Agnes. That's all I could find in newspaper, but I think I have limited access on FMP.
Thanks, Sis. I had details of his notice of death, and I have tried the Cornwall OPC route without success, but the advertisement is both new and interesting. I think the information I am looking for is to be found in South African sources - if they exist and are accessible. Your continuing interest and support is really appreciated.
Have a look at NAAIRS (National Automated Archival Information System) from the South Africa National Archives.
Thanks, DB I've had a look and found a number of references to "William White", several of which clearly do not relate to my man. Unfortunately I cannot recognise any of the remainder as being significant, and it would appear that I need a printer to examine then in detail, which I do not have.
