From Warwickshire, England, Marriages and Banns 1754-1910, I found a William Nixon marrying Mary Marlow 21 January 1851 Both were of full age. He named his father as Henry [a Hatter by Trade] and she did not name a Father. He was the only person of the wedding party - bride, groom and 2 witnesses - to sign a name. His occupation is stated as Labourer and residence was Rugby.

2 hours of searching census records has produced only one record for William - 1851 - ref. HO107/2070/174/22 [crown copyright T.N.A] living in Hillmorton. He is stated as age 27 and she age 22, but the occupation is to my eye, barely legible and in my opinion cannot be a Labourer.

Mary, I found in 1841 as a 12 year old servant.

I can find no trace of William in 1841, even though I have his parents - Henry and Jane and 8 of their 10 children still at home. I also cannot find his baptism either, even though I have found the baptisms of 8 of the other 9. The other baptism I am missing is for a younger brother Edwin born 3rd q. 1838.

Can I ask for help in filling in some blanks?

Hardly likely for a labourer in January to be a Butcher in April, eh? So not likely my William.

    Any ideas?

    There is a William Nixon on the 1841 HO107 - 1137 - 1/4 - 1 at Bilton

This William is a M S age 14, so the yob is out, but perhaps a possible.

I cannot find another candidate on the 1851 for William and Mary - have you found them on the later census?

Have not found them on any other census and since we can discount the 1851 one, what happened to them?

Not sure about the 1841, but maybe ------

Thanks for the baptism info - I still have problems with Family Search lookups.

Maybe he is mine after all. A 44 year old married butcher by the name of William Nixon, born Rugby is in Millbank Prison in the 1871 census census [RG10/125/68/10.

    Possible?

If so, his rap sheet is pretty impressive and goes back to the 1840's

I thought maybe this could be him on the 1871 census as a widower
RG10 2979/32/20 as a lodger with three children William age 12, George age 9, sons, and Alice daughter age 7. I cannot read his occupation though it looks something like Bole hanger!. Nothing else of note found - other than the baptism found by MollyMay - nothing for Edwin.

I think the William Nixon on the 1841 census at Bilton age 14 that MollyMay found is probably him. He was probably unsure of his exact year of birth.

Not my chap. He appears to have been born in Wolverhampton and is with his wife Sarah and William in 1861. His occupation was a Bell Hanger

I see this includes a trial at Warwickshire Midsummer Sessions in 1857, which ended in him being sentenced to 6 years' penal servitude , so perhaps this is him in 1861:

W.N., married, 34, labr, b. Rugby, prisoner in Dartmoor Convict Prison
    (RG 9/1458, f.107, p.12, line 24)

He had also been in trouble in 1851, being sentenced to 7 years' transportation at the Coventry Easter Sessions. So far I haven't found a record of him being transported, so perhaps he served out his sentence on the prison hulks. The trial was on 9 April 1851 according to the Criminal Register on Ancestry . . . just over a week after the census was taken.

Another William Nixon from Warwickshire with a Mary as his spouse and 4 kids in 1871 was born in abt. 1829. Ref. RG10/493/34/24 [crown copyright T.N.A] They were in Bethnal Green and he was a Weaver by trade. In the 1861 census - RG9/259/56/31 - he is a Silk Weaver and born in Bulkington,

As well as other offences in the 1840's.

Could he be the one in Millbank in 1871, serving out a sentence of 7 years for a conviction from 1867? Or could he be back in Dartmoor as W.N and still a labourer?

From the Rugby birthplace I am guessing that he may well be the same person.

I have just started digging around on the TNA website to see if there are any clues there. It sounds like he wasn't transported after the 1851 trial, but was sent to Dartmoor prison and released early, in 1854:

will keep looking in the TNA catalogue and see if they have anything else . . .

Some more background on William Nixon and Mary Marlow:

    William Nixon
1] It seems likely that William is the man working in Bilton as a Servant aged 14 [age rounded] on the 1841 census.
2] The 2 convictions for Larceny in 1844 and 1846 are him [for sure] based upon the age in the Criminal registers.
3] On 21 January 1851, he marries Mary Marlow and his occupation is a Labourer
4] On 30 March 1851, the census was taken. The reference is HO107/2070/174/22. Address is High Street, Hilmorton and he is a Butcher and his age is correct as 27.
5] On 9 April 1851 he is convicted of Larceny and sentenced to 7 years. See Jane's message about this event in post #11 & 14.
6] On 29 June 1857 he is convicted of Larceny and sentenced to 6 years. I believe this is the same person enumerated as W.N incarcerated at Dartmoor in the 1861 census - reference RG9/1458/107/12.
7] On 31 December 1867 he is convicted of Larceny and sentenced to 7 years. This is almost certainly the man incarcerated at Millbank Prison in the 1871 census - see my post #7

If we presume, based upon his past record, that he served his full sentence, then he was likely released in early 1875. Was he still married to Mary or was he married to another? Can he be found after 1875? I have seen some possibles, but nothing seems to fit.

    Mary Marlow:
1] She was born abt. 1829 in Willoughby, Warwickshire and was baptised 29 March 1829 as the illegitimate daughter of Dorothy Marlow in Willoughby.
2] On 13 October 1831, her mother married an Ag. Labourer named Joseph Worrall in Willoughby
3] On the census for 1841, Mary is working as a 12 year old servant in Willoughby and Dorothy and Joseph now have 4 children of their own and are living in Grandborough, Warwickshire. Joseph is still in the same line of work.
4] On the census for 1851, Dorothy and Joseph are still in Grandborough but with 3 children only.
5] On the census for 1861 & 1871 Dorothy and Joseph are still in Grandborough. Dorothy died in 1880 and in 1881 Joseph is a Widower and still in Grandborough and working as an Ag. Labourer. He dies in the Workhouse at Grandborough in 1888.

As for Mary she disappears after 1851. She doesn't show up with Dorothy or Joseph in later census records. Did she stay married to William, leave him and remarry or die?

    There is one more:
    24 July1849 - no age - Warwickshire - 14 days for assault.

Incidentally, his last conviction was for stealing 47 pounds weight of lead. Quite a load - wonder what he wanted it for and what it was worth back then?
