Can anyone find a baptism for Job?
He married Sarah Gutridge (b 1780 Rickmansworth Herfordshire d/o John and Ann) on 31/10/1803 at St Martin Ruislip - he is entered as Job Townson/en.
They then produce 10 children, the first Ann (a criple [sic] and idiot on the 1851 census) was bap. in Rickmansworth, the following 9 in Ruislip, all named Towns[h]end.
Job died in 1831 and was buried 1/1/1832 at St Martins Ruislip age 52, giving a yob as 1780c
His only son was called Thomas

He and Sarah lived most of their life in Northwood Middlesex (on the Hertfordshire boundary)

The only one I have managed to find is a Job TOWNSON son of Edward & Hannah (nee ROBINSON) who was baptised at Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire on 28 October 1781. Siblings Ann bap 1784, Deness (female) bap 1786, Thomas bap 1788, Niah (female) bap 1792 and Jane bap 1795, all at Minster Lovell. I cannot find a likely marriage for Job between 1800-1820 in Oxfordshire but whether he is your Job is a moot point, although there do not seem to be that many around.

That could be very interesting Janet. The 'other side' of my OH's family hail from Oxfordshire and have come across some wonderful name spelling which I attribute to their accent - Olliffe = ol if fer = Oliver for one, so Townson could easily morph into Townsend.
One of Job's daughters was called Hannah, one Ann and another Dinah and his only son Thomas, so definitely worth further investigation - thank you very much.

It never ceases to amaze me, I also have TOWNSENDs in my direct line, regarding the variations in spelling of this surname, but I suppose different accents plus phonetic spellings and the lack of education lends itself to the weird and wonderful doesn't it. The Thomas who was baptised in 1788 is in London in the 1861 census although prior to that he does seem to have married and lived in Oxfordshire. I did find a marriage at Bampton, Oxfordshire on 8 October 1814 for an Abiah TOWNSEND to a Gabriel CASTLE of Hinton, Berkshire, according to the Oxfordshire Marriage Index and wondered if this could be the marriage of "Niah" baptised 1792. Hope the information turns up trumps for you.

I've got Townsends in my direct line too  They have proved a right pain to track down and I haven't got very far with them at all. Mine came from Berkshire, but right on the border with Oxfordshire, so some of the places are now deemed to be Oxforshire o_O Having not looked at them for some time, you have prompted me to take another look - I may or may not thank you

Perhaps we should form a Townsend Club :D

Go on - be a devil;) take another look. I have just gone back to them having got nowhere years back.

I do find coverage for Bucks, Berks and Herts difficult (on line). Oxfordshire is slightly better now, but all three counties like to change their boundaries regularly, just to thwart us :headbang:

This as Ann says is on what was then the County border of Oxford and
Berks. The earlier generation seem to have been at Standlake and
married at Stanton Harcourt, where the groom is of Cumnor, then in
    Berks.

OK, I've been a devil but fat lot of good that did me. The only thing I found was that 3x Gt Grandfather James, was in the Coldstream Guards between 1806-1821 - but his service records consist of one page and told me absolutely nothing :sceptical: It is, however, a very nice single page :D Oh, and his conduct was good.

And whilst I was searching, I kept sticking Job into the first name box :nailbiting:

Thanks for thinking of me - you have made a tiny step forward now you know you have a guardsman in the family.
    Glad he behaved himself:D

Quite a few Hertfordshire parish register images are online at FMP which, as the majority of my maternal line come from the Ashwell/Hitchin/Letchworth area, has been very useful. Buckinghamshire records are more difficult, paternal direct line in this county, and in the past I have used the Buckinghamshire FHS search facility they offer which is pretty reasonably priced, although they are only transcriptions, but it did at least show me which parishes, and when, my HICKMAN line inhabited.

I am pretty lucky with my TOWNSEND line as they all seem to be based in the Alveston area of Warwickshire, Ancestry having the parish register images online, but you do have to think out of the box as regards some of the spellings and the transcriptions!!

I am waiting for them to be up and runinng again and will avail myself of their services. I am also wating on some PR transcriptions I have bought from the FHS, but like most things at the moment, they too are experiencing difficulties with the current restrictions.
