Help with the first name please

Findem

The Fearless One. Rest in Peace.
This is a shocker I'm not sure if anyone can solve it but I live in hope.

On Ancesty's Essex Parish Register Index it has the first name as Jeremie, I had it originally as John but looking at it now it appears to be too long to be John.

I can read the rest OK son of John Kinge etc it's just that first name.

I think it may be Joseph as I can see a possible ose.h, but I must admit I can't see a 'p' there. It looks more like an 'r', but it may be the downstroke is lost. Do you have more of the page for comparisons?

Was on FreeReg this afternoon and it has the first name as J*h, so at least FreeReg thinks the first letter is J and the last h but is obviously unsure what lays between those two letters. At one point I thought it might be Jeremiah but the more I looked the more uncertain I became. :headbang: :D

I remained convinced it was too long to be John so how I got that originally beats me.

Just for the record these are the names of King(e) fathers who baptised children at Bocking around the same period as John: James, Timothy, Edmund, Frances, Christopher and Joseph.

Here are a couple from a bit later on, the 1717 Baptism) entries has a Jeremiah in it. I'll now seek out the images with dates around the time of the subject of this topic.

Would like second opinions of the first names please, should be an easier task.

i recalled there was a Jeremiah King baptising children around the same time as John. had a quick search and came up with a couple, both baptised at Great Dunmow, parents Jeremiah and Elizabeth King.
Jeremiah 1701 and Elizabeth 1702.

Also found the baptisms of two children at Newport, Essex, parents Jer and Ann King.
Thomas 1696 and Ann 1700.

Great Dunmow is quite close to Bocking and Newport is not too far away.

Strange names - I see Ottoway and Ottowell

Here are the rest I have, like the others, all taken from Ancestry's Essex Parish Register Index.
The marriage is between John Kinge and Ann Pearse
The baptisms are:
(blank) son of John Kinge
Anne daughter of John Kinge
Ann daughter of John Kinge
(blank) daughter of John Kinge

Strange names - I see Ottoway and Ottowell

Ancestry's Essex Parish Register Index had the King child who was born 2 Mar 1716 as Howell King, I thought Howell was strange until I saw the Otts whatever they are.

You could well be right with Ottoway and Ottowell, I was and still am very undecided what lay between Ott and ll.

These Bocking Kings have been quite troublesome.

One positive thing, I've now been able to establish that Ann Pearse, John Kinge's wife, is Ann the daughter of Joseph Pearse and Elizabeth Clarke, Ann was baptised 3 Apr 1674 at Bocking.
