Oops! Sorry - I forgot to turn the page! Yes, it could well be Henry Etta - I have just found the birth registration in Runcorn district, and that is the only one that comes anywhere close.
The cover page of this census enumerator's book has a useful description: 'The whole of the Township of Clifton - comprising two Farm Houses viz. Clifton Hall & Rocksavage*, 30 Cottages, and Turn Bridge House, and about half a mile in length of the River Weaver Navigation, commencing near to the Clifton Turn Bridge, and ending near to the Weston Chemical Works'. *At first I thought this said Rocksarage, but when I searched for that, Google kindly showed me stuff about the Rocksavage power station. I am fairly sure of the 'Turn Bridge' reading on this page, even though later it does look more like Town Bridge. (Might a 'turn bridge' be the same as a swing bridge?) John's occupation I think must be Rock savage Bridge Attender.
Here's a photographic tour of the River Weaver Navigation. See in particular the one labelled 'Runcorn Rowing Club and removed Swing bridge at Clifton' for what's left of the swing bridge: http://www. tuesdaynightclub.co.uk/Tour_02/Tour02_26.html
Yep, I edited when I realised that I should have turned the page......and Henry Etta makes perfect sense...... Ann
Huncamunca, as usual you are right I did my own Google searches after I posted and found that Rocksavage was a house owned by the Savage family, C17th century if I remember rightly, in ruins by the C19th (featuring in Romantic sketchs of landscape). Additionally Clifton was also known as Rocksavage, the 1901 census names it as "Clifton or Rocksavage" which explains why John Thomas was living at Clifton Turn Bridge and his occupation was Rocksavage Bridge attender!
Hello, I have been looking into my family tree and think you may be able to help me. Have you come across a Sheila Ann Thomas in your research ?
Hi, not that I recall. Perhaps you can start a new thread with the info you have and we can try to help
