William Nixon was born c. 1761 in Rugeley, Staff.'s and was the son [I believe] of Samuel Nixon, born c. 1737 in Rugeley and Mary Wood [birth date unknown] who married c.1761 in Rugeley.

    Can these events be found?

William is likely to be their 1st child. Can other siblings be found?

William, their son, married my 4X Gt-Grand Aunt - Mary Rowledge - on 4 July 1785 in Church Lawford, Warwickshire. They had 9 children [all found, reserached and put to bed]. Wiliam died 1828 in Rugby and Mary died in 1818.

2 of William and Mary's children were transported to Australia shortly before or after Mary's death. Their lives in Australia have been researched.

Another Nixon - Daniel son of John and Mary [Sneyd] was baptised 14 August 1808 - source Staffordshire, Burslem - Parish Registers 1761-1809, may be the same Daniel who suffered 3 strikes and out and was convicted of Highway Robbery [similar charges to the 2 sons of William and Mary] and was deported 5 August 1826. I am trying to determine if he is related to my clan.

    Any help appreciated.

    Colin

Bit of a gap between the last two, which may, or may not, be significant?

May be sticking my head above the parapet, but.
One tree has Daniel Nixon born 1793 Warrickshire died Windsor Hospital 1839.
NSWBDM has Daniel Nixon V183995623A died Windsor Hospital in 1839 age 36...making his birth 1803.
Only one death for a Daniel Nixon at that time.
Your Daniel (above) was baptised in 1808.
So we have a discrepancy of ages up to 15 years.
All these Daniels point to the convict Daniel Nixon who arrived on the Speke in 1827.
Maybe his convict records will determine who his parents were.

Hello Archie's Mum and welcome to my problem. The more heads sticking up will not, as far as I am concerned, warrant a boomerang thrown at it.

You have the right Daniel - son of John and Mary - baptised 1808. He was convicted of highway robbery and transported 5 August 1826. I believe he is the same Daniel who died in Widsor Hospital in 1839.

One of my contacts - a Transcription Agent - has just informed that death records prior to 1856 are based upon Early Church Burial record and do not indicate parents names. So as you say I may need to see or obtain a transcript of the Convict Records - but how do I access those records?

Yes, it is a bit sad, but at least we know what happened to him.

Now to see if we can link him to my Nixon's.

The name of the prison hulk was "Justitia"

The gap was interesting, but the only significant items I've managed to find were burials:
These were taken from Staffordshire Extracted Parish Records:
Text: 03 Sept. 1769 Mary Nixon bur.
Book: Acte for Burying in Wollen
    Collection:taffordshire: Rocester - Parish Registers, 1705-1812.

Further digging shows this for Samuel -
Text: 29 Oct 1782 Samuel Nixon, paup., par. of Walton bur
Book: Acte for Burying in Wollen
Collection: Staffordshire: Rocester - Parish Registers, 1705-1812

There doesn't appear to be another marriage for a Samuel Nixon to another lady named Mary.

Looking at the 5 baptisms and the the possible naming pattern, I have concluded that William [1761] was named after Samuel's father.

As for the Mary [1777], could she have been named after his wife and been born between the birth of James [1764] and Ann [1767] and just been a late baptism or is this wishful thinking?

I have to say that I'm not very familiar with this part of England but I don't think that Rugeley is very close to Rocester nor to Walton?

Also, I don't think that naming patterns were that strong in England at the time. If they were, though, I'd expect the first four children to have the grandparent's names and only with the fifth child would a parent get a mention, which is just when Mary figures in this family?

    Hi Colin,

I'd be inclined to seek out the original records referred to on FamilySearch to begin with as they may hold more information, or even different information, as transcripts can be erroneous as well as incomplete. Once you've done that it would be best to seek out further records from the same parish to see if the family burials were there, before considering burials in a different parish that is some distance away and also on the border with another county. Nixon is not an uncommon name so there were probably a few people around with the same name.

Naming patterns can be very useful but in my experience they were not adhered to all that closely in England so you can't rely on them as evidence in the absence of other data.

The gap between the last two baptisms for me raises the possibility that the last one is not the same family, but on the other hand the couple could have had a run of miscarriages or neo-natal deaths in that gap or just been less fertile for any of a host of reasons. Then again they might have moved to live elsewhere or, as you suspect, the mother could have died. Neither of us knows enough to be able to say right now, though.

    Sue

Been a few years since I last checked out this branch of the family - children of Samuel and Mary Nixon nee Wood.

It would appear that the baptism of a daughter - Mary - 11 May 1777 in Rugeley St. Augustine, follows closely to a death and burial of a Mary - daughter of Samuel and Mary - in Rugeley St. Augustine on 22 August 1776.
A baptism for an earlier Mary as daughter of Samuel and Mary I have yet to find.

Hi Colin, Happy New Year. Am not sure if this will help you but transcripts of Rugeley St. Augustine records 1722-1841 have recently been made available for immediate download as a pdf file at a cost of £9 from: bmsgh-shop. org. uk (spaces added to break the link as it is a commercial site).

    Colin,

If you still have your sub, or access to FindmyPast, the parish registers for Rugeley are available there, including the baptism of William, the baptism of Samuel in 1737, his marriage to Mary WOOD, etc.

Possible marriage for Samuel's parents on Ancestry's Warwickshire parish registers at Ansley on 20 January 1736 - Samuel NIXON & Sarah STEVENS

Hi Janet - Happy New Year.

I still have my FMP sub and have now seen this baptism for William [27 Dec. 1776]. This is interesting - but also a tad confusing and here's why:
1] A Willm. Nixon - son of Saml. and Mary was baptised in Rugeley, Staff.'s on 11 Oct. 1761 - source - England, Select Births and Christenings 1538-1975 FHL Film #421585
2] A William [transcribed as NISSON] married Mary Rowledge after Banns in Church Lawford 4 July 1785 - source - Warwickshire, England Marriages and Banns 1754-1910.
From this marriage - according to information I have obtained - they produced 9 children including the 2 sons Samuel and Thomas who were transported to Oz after convictions for Highway Robbery in 1818.
    3] A William Nixon married a Mary Burley in Rugeley, Staff.'s 21 Oct. 1775 - source - England, Marriages 1538-1973.

as for deaths and burials I have found 2 - details as follows:
1] A William Nixon age 66 was buried in Rugby St. Andrew, Warwicks. on 18 July 1828 - source - Warwickshire, England Burials 1813-1910 [from Ancestry]. I believe this to be thie William who married Mary Rowledge in 1785. A Mary Nixon aged 55 was buried in Rugby St. Andrew on 17 Dec. 1818. Given that her sons - Samuel and Thomas - were under sentence of death prior to being transported, this likely precipitated her death.

2] A William Nixon age 78 was buried in Rugeley St. Augustine, Staff.'s on 26 Jul. 1854 - source - Warwickshire Burials [from FMP]. I believe this William Nixon was the son of William and Mary nee Burley who were married in 1775 and is the William baptised 27 Dec. 1776..

I feel that rather than remain confused, I should eliminate and discount the details emanating from the 1776 baptism. Do you agree

Seems reasonable Colin. The 1776 William was only 9 in 1785.

I kinda like this, Janet, as Ansley is about 30 miles from Rugeley and the year of their marriage 1736 could definitely produce a son c. 1737.

I have found nothing really that tells me anything about about his bride Mary Wood.
As for Samuel Nixon there are 4 burials on FMP between 1787 and 1804 in Rugeley St. Augustine. One is for a son of William buried 2 Feb. 1789. The others are - with no age or son of indicated:
    23 Dec. 1787
    28 Jun 1797
    8 Feb. 1804

    How to eliminate --- ???

Difficult. I cannot find any Lichfield Wills for any NIXONs of Rugeley on FMP. Ancestry do have a Land Tax Redemption Record in 1798 for a Saml NIXON who is occupying property of a Jas HOLT but that doesn't really help as it doesn't clarify which Samuel NIXON he is.

There is an Apprenticeship record on Ancestry wherein a Wm NIXON of Rudgeley, Staffordshire, Felt Maker, took on as an apprentice Thos LENTON on 25 May 1781 but again no clue as to which William NIXON he is.

Sorry, not much help here. Will think some more.
